Autumn 2001
Q4 2008
Winter 2016
Q2 2020
If you want rank them. I would say, Autumn 2001 > Q2 2020 > Q4 2008 > Winter 2016

Q2 2020 by far. Thousands of people were dying due to COVID. Cities were being destroyed during the George Floyd protests. Also, Q3 2008 was darker than Q4 2008. That’s when the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy happened, which was the nadir of the recession. Q4 2008 if anything was marked by optimism due to Obama winning the election.

Stock market crashed at the very end of Q3 2008(29th september) like 2 or 3 days before Q4 started so basically the entire quarter was pre-crash. Q4 is the aftermath where everyone felt the effects of the crash.

Late 2020 by far, I was there for late 2001 and while it had dark elements it was not the same as 2020 was. At all.
Despite 9/11, Anthrax scares, Economy dipping you had some slight brightness that counteracted in the form of entertainment.
- GTA 3 - Xbox & Gamecube launch - MJ returns to the NBA after retiring in 98 - Harry Potter hysteria due to the movie - Lord of the Rings hysteria due to the movie - Exciting debuts of Shakira and Michelle Branch - Blow up Jimmy Eat World and even more pop punk

You couldn’t even do that at the height of the pandemic

Yeah definitely 2020. End of 2008 had a weird vibe, like it was very stylistically dark yet you also had a lot of "hope" despite the recession. 2016 I don't really think of as dark.

2020 9/11 was an US thing Covid was global End of discussion Not to mention, you could still go out to movies in Fall 2001. In fact, some really good and popular movies came out then like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Monsters Inc. You couldn’t do that in 2020. No way.

COVID literally impacted every single aspect of society.

COVID literally impacted every single aspect of society. In COVID you had all the time in the world to watch movies and play games if we're going by the "pop culture taking your mind off the crisis" argument.

Sure there was a lot of terror, but COVID was still way worse And the world basically did end for a while
