1960s
Best = 1966, a legendary year filled with fantastic rock, pop and Motown classics as well as the beginnings of psychedelia.
Worst = 1961, one of the most boring years for the charts in history, very few things didn't fell like dull, safe, milquetoast and washed out versions of previous genres.
1970s
Best = 1976, I tend to flipflop between this year and 1979, but this year had so many fantastic rock and disco hits.
Worst = 1974, possibly my least favorite year for the charts of all time, pop was consistently lame and bad, very few soul and funk records stood out and commercial rock was in a mini-dark age with some horrible glam rock clogging the charts. The only bright spot would be the early disco hits.
1980s
Best = 1984, definitely the peak of MTV new wave in my eyes, pop and R&B were consistently fun and inventive that year and early glam metal was nicely silly rather than abhorrently lame.
Worst = 1986, new wave and synthpop started to decline and replaced by a buttload of terrible adult contemporary, while glam metal was in full annoying cock rock phase.
1990s
Best = 1995, the year alternative was at its peak of influence, hip hop hard hitting as ever, rave fresh as ever and pop and R&B started their enjoyable interlacing phase.
Worst = 1991, one of the most poorly produced years in existence, so many new jack swing, pop rap, adult contemporary and arena rock were just straight up ugly sounding. The whole year aged very poorly.
2000s
Best = 2004, an extremely diverse year for the charts, some of the most fun urban pop, hip hop and electronica were produced in this year, while rock was in a mostly appreciably goofy phase rather than overly self-serious.
Worst = 2009, another poorly produced year, the shift towards bleepy electropop, especially when mixed with R&B and rock, really sounded thin and ugly this year and not as dense and fun like in later years.
2010s
Best = 2013, a year filled with fantastic festival EDM songs, some fun stomping indie before the genre got bland, and plenty of creative and refreshing pop and hip hop.
Worst = 2016, the most poorly produced year in existence beating 1991 and 2009, filled with ugly squelchy future bass drops, annoying pitch shifted vocals, dull reverb and thin sounding trap.
1979 is my favorite year of the 70s too. You had the rise of new wave, disco was still in its prime, and there were lots of classic rock hits. Though 1977 is close for me.
IDK what my least favorite is. TBH the 70s didn’t really have a bad era for music the same way the 60s had 1960-1962, the 80s/90s had 1988-1990, the 00s had 2005-2007, and the 10s had, well, almost the entire decade TBH.
As for me personally, the worst 00s rock is the kind where they decided to bring back the 80s cock rock mentality. This mostly started around 2006 with bands like Nickelback and Hinder, and became dominant in 2008. I don’t mind dark angsty stuff at all (except Simple Plan, they SUCK).
