I'm not sure if it's something that anyone else has noticed, but it seems as though swearing isn't as much of a taboo in the 2010s. The "B" and "S" words don't seem to receive the same amount of shock or criticism as they once did. They've essentially become regular vocabulary words. Even the "F" word has become more common, in my opinion. What are your thoughts on it? Do you believe swearing is less of a taboo in the 2010s?

It's gotten less and less taboo since the '90s especially. The amount of cursing people has pretty much plateaued since the Internet became fully ingrained in everyday culture and popular music became less compromising.

People's attitudes towards swearing have generally softened over the years. I've definitely noticed a change within the past ten years. It seems as though many people don't even raise an eyebrow when they hear the "S", "B" and "F" words now.

I'm still fascinated by the fact that even in 1966, having the word "God" in the name of a Beach Boys song, which didn't even use the Lord's name in any offensive way and just casually affirmed His omniscience, was enough to provoke significant controversy.

Yes! Which is why I'm annoyed that Popedia and inthe00s don't let me swear. What year is it?!

I’m not sure since you could still be rude without cursing.

There is the "Keep It Clean" dot point in the "Rules & Guidelines" page (you can find it under the "About" drop-down menu), however that's namely in regards to vulgar and offensive posts. There have been some instances where the "S" and "B" words have been said on the boards and they haven't been deleted/removed. I'm not sure what other members think of the topic, but as long as it's not excessive and too offensive in nature, I personally don't think swearing is too much of an issue.

I could've sworn (no pun) I said "shit" once and the word was censored (by not being printed) Edit: oh, there it is!

As long as it's not excessive (e.g saying the f word 5-10 times in one post ) or too offensive, yep.

I would also agree that it has gotten less taboo since the 90's. I may even argue the late 80's as well.

Certainly. Nowadays, it's not uncommon to hear young kids cursing more than they were even about a decade ago. I believe the rise of social media apps and how easily accessible they are have been one of the contributing factors to profanity at such a young age. Kids can access anything on the Internet these days with just one click of a button. Watching YouTube videos doesn't always cost money. Googling what a word means is the easiest thing anybody can do. And because of smartphones, we can do it anywhere without anyone knowing. And it isn't just kids, it's everyone.

Social media (and the internet, in general) has definitely played a role in the breakdown of swearing as a taboo. When I compare it to when I was in my childhood during the Mid-Late 2000s, the general attitudes towards swearing have definitely changed. A 7/8 year old swearing would have overwhelmingly been deemed as unacceptable over a decade ago.

I don't doubt the internet has made attitudes more relaxed. TV shows too are getting more daring with the language. Music on the radio they still censor the crap out of, a thing I've always found to be stupid. Kids copy what they hear at home and from friends, so don't go blaming music!
