However, I get what OP is talking about. Often times, when talking about the 2010s, people will say "We're in the 2000s" or "2017 is the best year of the early 2000s". Stuff like that. They are using the 2000s century definition instead of just the decade, which is weird. I think it's because the 2000s didn't have a strong, unified identity as the '50s-'90s did. Unless you were still closely following the pop culture at the time, decade-defining characteristics such as the Emo scene and crunk/snap-rap wouldn't seem too obvious. I can sort of understand why a lot of people lump the 2010s with the 2000s, even though the two decades have their own respective identities.
