A thread to discuss iTunes Charts from different countries around the world. Songs currently at #1:US: "Cry Pretty" - Carrie Underwood CAN: "Zombie" - Bad Wolves UK: "One Kiss" - Calvin Harris ft. Dua Lipa AUS: "Zombie" - Bad Wolves NZ: "These Days" - Rudimental Here are a few observations: * "Young, Dumb & Broke" has risen back to #69 on the AUS iTunes Chart. What is it about that song that the Australian public like so much? Just a week ago, the song was at #98. * Bad Wolves' cover of "Zombie" is only placed at #30 on the UK iTunes Chart. The Brits mustn't be too embracing of the song, because it also hasn't charted within the UK Top-100 Singles Chart. * "Whatever It Takes" by Imagine Dragons is currently at #5 on the US Chart, which is pretty surprising.

Interestingly enough, the Backstreet Boy's new single, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", has debuted at #4 on the US iTunes Chart. If it performs well on the iTunes chart, there's a possibility that it may even chart with the top-50 of the Billboard Hot 100. It will be interesting to see how it goes.
Meanwhile, on the Australian iTunes Chart, three Silverchair singles have randomly reemerged on the chart. "Straight Lines" has debuted at #27, while "The Greatest View" and "Tomorrow" are at #35 and #80 respectively. I'm not really sure what the reason for it is. The band broke up back in 2011, so it's not as if they have just released a new album or anything.

kworb.net/pop/ is a great site to follow charts across the globe. Backstreet Boys #1 on iTunes US, what is this madness.

They already made a sort of comeback last year when they were featured on Florida Georgia Line’s “God, Your Mama, and Me”, but yeah, for them to do this well with a new single is pretty fascinating, even if it’s only a short-lived success. I don’t have the chance to listen to the song yet, but I’ll check it out after I’m done visiting my mom. It definitely sparks my curiosity.

So, I just checked out the Backstreet Boys' new song. I love its production, it feels slick, heavy, and progressive without relying on all the annoying reverb and trap clichés that cause so much pop to sound the same. The lyrics, however, are sort of lackluster and not worthy of the anthemic drums, chilling synthesizers, and excellent composition that make this track otherwise quite good. It's a song I can definitely imagine myself listening to a fair amount this year, but it doesn't have quite the technical perfection to make it one of the year's greatest hits.
Also quite noteworthy is a new song by a guy named Kris Wu, who just wrested the #1 spot from the Backstreets. He sounds pretty similar to Drake or especially 808s & Heartbreak-era Kanye West, but he has enough of a sonic character to stick out on his own. His breakthrough release "Like That" doesn't blow me away or anything, but it is great to finally see some more serious representation from Asians in American pop music, considering how egregiously absent they've been here for far too long.

BTS has just spawned several chart entries onto the iTunes charts around the world. Aren't they a Korean boy-band? If that's the case, it might suggest that the music landscape is almost certainly transitioning at the moment.

K-pop overall gained a lot of traction during this decade world-wide, ever since the massive success of Gagnam Style. It isn't the first time this happens with BTS when it comes to iTunes charts, it's usually their fans worldwide that buy the new hits en-masse immediately after they're available. Don't think it will last long

I think even Girls' Generation cultivated a decent international following before "Gangnam Style".What's really strange is that here in the US, the headline scroll is not only promoting BTS' new album, but also some Japanese boy band (?) with heavy jazzy influences, Cero. They have no Wikipedia entry and it looks like nobody is really buying their album based on the popularity bars. There was also a compilation album that was supposed to be available today but did not get put up on iTunes, even though it was uploaded to Spotify and other websites. It's a strange weekend indeed for iTunes.

In that case, i'm surprised that their success hasn't been replicated on the Billboard Hot 100 or other Top-40 charts around the world (with the exception of South Korea). I know they wouldn't likely be as successful on the Top-40 charts, but you'd think that at least one of their singles would debut on it.

Bad Wolves' cover of "Zombie" is to the Australian and Canadian iTunes Charts what "Shape of You" was to the Top-40 charts around the world. It simply will not budge out of the bottom half of the Top-10, despite the fact that it was released over six months ago. I'm not complaining though. I'm not sure if anyone else does this as well, but I sometimes find it interesting to read the Top-40 charts of countries which generally do not come to mind, such as South Africa, France, Germany and Brazil. In the case of South Africa, "For You", "I'll Be There" and "Solo" are all currently on the iTunes Chart. Even South Africa is more embracing of British pop-music than what the US is.

Good Charlotte have released a new song, called "Actual Pain". I haven't listened to it yet, but based off the articles I have read, it's supposedly a return to their "Emo" roots. It has debuted at #47 on the Australian iTunes Chart and #56 in New Zealand. To be honest, i'm not really surprised that the song has debuted on our iTunes Chart, because Australia loves Good Charlotte. Joel and Benji Madden were even judges on The Voice: Australia between 2012-2016.

In light of Peter Tork's passing, The Monkees' "Daydream Believer" is currently at #64 on the Australian iTunes Chart. There actually aren't any Monkees songs on the US or UK iTunes Charts at the moment, which I find surprising.

Hole's "Celebrity Skin" is currently at #80 on the Australian iTunes Chart. Seems very random!
