By "peak" I am referring to when it was it its best, not necessarily the most widespread. This is obviously subjective and my own opinion can be swayed.
AIM: 2003 Had some cool new themes but still the most relevant platform.
MySpace: 2005 Just cuz.
Facebook: 2010 Before everyone's grandma joined and shamed them out of posting the juicy stuff. No timeline. Funny groups and becoming a "fan". Little tracking or corporate interference. People still posted giant albums.
Twitter: 2013 Disgruntled facebook users emigrated here to post the dirt. Politicians kept a low profile.
Vine: 2014 It just got obnoxious after that. Then it died.
Instagram: 2015 Higher quality posts/photos than prior. Feed was still in order. "Insta"-fill in the blank was not a widespread term yet. Honorable mention for 2017 for longer videos. Dishonorable mention for stories because I hate there being a sense of urgency to go on, it stresses me out.
Snapchat: ?? I don't use it for the reasons listed above and for the fact I enjoy being a pain in the ass who cannot be contacted through it.
YouTube: ?? This one is difficult because older content remains more easily accessible than on other platforms. For that reason it continues to get better all the time, as the number of videos grows. As the "mainstream" content seems to dive, there are also higher quality videos counteracting it. As far as being fun as a social platform and the majority mainstream content being enjoyable though, I'd say 2009.
Feel free to mention more. Games are good too.

Did you ever hear about a site called "Friendster" in 2002/2003, just out of curiosity?

Facebook: 2011
I was tossing up between 2011 or 2012, however I decided to go with the former. Facebook's peak was definitely in the Early 2010s, regardless.
Myspace: 2006
Myspace was undoubtedly at it's peak during the Mid 2000s. I don't remember it being as ambiguous back in 2004. To be honest, I think you could make a case for either 2006 or 2007.

I learned that Friendster, which came out in 2002, was the first Social Networking site to gain over 1 million members, a sizeable number of people who made MySpace popular in 2004/2005 started out on Friendster. Six Degrees, a site launched in 1997, was the first social networking site.

Facebook: Since I joined in 2011 I would say 2012-2013 were the funnest to use it
YouTube: Quality content is still being put out, even though 2015-2017 were very scary years for YouTubers. Comment sections have been extremely terrible since 2014

It's basically just proto-Skype with the only destinction of the ability to «wizz» as well as sending giant animated emojis

I think facebook was earlier than most are saying, I joined it in 2010 and it was already bigger than big and probably starting to decline. I'd go 2008. My forum which is massive now had a bit of a dip for a few years and it was 2007/08 and facebook was mostly to blame.

This thread is about the years each social media platform was at its best NOT when it was the most widespread

MSN – 2007 Facebook – 2010 Twitter – 2011 Instagram – Still going strong! Foursquare – 2010 (I wish it was still popular ) YouTube – 2010 I guess. Also, high five! I deliberately avoid Snapchat too
