As the title suggests, what do you think of your country's overall taste in music and how would you compare it with other countries?
What I Like:
* The Australian public have chose to embrace indie pop in the 2010s. As a result, we've largely missed out on a lot of the Trap songs that have plagued the Billboard Hot 100, such as "Motorsport", "Walk It Talk It", "Drip" and "My Way". In their place, we've had songs such as "Chateau", "We're Going Home", "Let Me Down Easy" and "Cocoon".
* I'm really appreciative of the fact that Australia has always been very embracing of British pop music. I think the Australian public genuinely realise that the UK produces a lot of great talent, because shows such as Britain's Got Talent and The Voice Kids: UK air in primetime on free-to-air TV over here, yet the American versions are reserved to subscription-TV only.
* The Australian public is still quite supportive of rock music, as evident by Bad Wolves' cover of "Zombie" reaching #26, Blink 182's "Bored To Death" peaking at #50 and the Foo Fighter's "Run" reaching #52.
* Admittedly, i'm glad that hip-hop has never been a huge cultural phenomenon here. While it may not be good from a diverse point of view, some of the worst songs to have ever been released are hip-hop songs and we have fortunately missed out on some of them, thanks to the country not embracing Gangsta-Rap and Snap/Ringtone-Rap.
* Adding on from the last point, I can't stress how thankful I am that the Australian public completely rejected "Laffy Taffy" and "Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It", despite the fact that the former topped the Billboard Hot 100. The two songs did not chart within the Top-50 here. Even the UK allowed "Laffy Taffy" to reach #30 on their charts, which really surprises me.
What I Dislike:
* Our taste in music is bizarre. For example, we let a rant about American society become a Top-5 hit back in 2005, for reasons which I honestly cannot explain. We also let "Moscow" by Genghis Khan (West Germany's entrant to the 1979 Eurovision contest) became a massive chart-topping hit, even though it didn't chart in any other country (not even in West Germany).
* I think it would be good if the Australian public were more embracing of artists/bands from New Zealand. I mean, I realise that New Zealand does not have a large music industry, but there's plenty of other NZ artists/bands that could have achieved success here too.
* The Australian public's taste in music isn't as diverse as the UK's.
