Just on this topic, one thing that I have observed is that there are a lot of people out there who hold the view (especially Baby Boomers) that music went downhill in 1990 and has never been the same since. I know it's a viewpoint that @mamafrankie has, but I have also come across it on other sites on the internet and I have overheard people say that in real life as well.
Honestly, I think a large proportion of people born before c.1960 would either have a neutral or a negative perception of the 1990s. I can't say that I know anyone born before the '60s who praises the decade and looks back on the pop culture/society of the time favourably.

The thing is, our Shark, is that it ceased to be music and degenerated into unintelligible noise. No classics were being written either. Before the 1990s, we had stuff like 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother', 'Hey Jude', 'Bohemian Rhapsody', A Whiter Shade Of Pale', 'The Winner Takes It All', 'Baker Street', 'Blue Suede Shoes' and 'The Living Years'. Plus the Motown legends. To my book, the last true classic was 'The Living Years'. Also the artists were more interested in fame for fame's sake and making a quick buck than the genuine love of music.

A pretty interesting movie on that subject, it basically puts a family from a 70s sitcom in the world of the 90s. I think it's pretty funny to see the contrast between the colorful, happy-go-lucky and well-behaved (although superficially so) idyllic family and their grimey, wild and misconducting surroundings.

That sounds like a really interesting plot for a movie! I'll have to check it out.

I'm sure they did. People are always negative and are never happy with current times.

They did, I remember people saying in my class they hated the decade in 99, I also remember Grunge being made front of in 1998. I feel like every decade is hated in the time they are in for some reason. I wouldn't say they were generally HATED like people hated the 2000s in 2009. But there was some hate.
Lots of factors (what is going on in your life) play a factor if you like a decade. I remember after Columbine the hate for the 90s started getting real. It was not the majority of people tho.

I turned 2 in 1999, and since I only had a few conscious memories of the decade, I cant really say whether or not I actually hated the decade, but I did remember wanting to be big as my brother who was only 10 for 90% of the year seemed like a big grownup from my perspective at the time. I can say that people back then hated the 90s the same way people hate the 2010s now, but the people who actually like the 90s now are mainly the millennials born in the 80s as they were old enough during the 90s decade to actually have interest in the trends then, while older generations were too old to actually play around in the decade as they had to deal with their own bills at the time, while those in the 80s could be dependent on their parents at the time. I would not actually look back to the 90s if I was born in the 80s, since I never look back to my life as a kid as I always wanted to be an adult and be independent.
