Knowing that Australia barely qualified for Russia 2018 and since it'll likely be Tim Cahil's final World Cup before retirement, unfortunately I would not be overly surprised if this might the last time we see the Socceroos play in a World Cup for a while! I'll be supporting whoever is playing England! I think many Australians would be with you there. Sorry, couldn't resist!
Most Australians would support anybody before following England in anything.

The wait is almost over, a matter of hours now before the opening ceremony. I have listened to a lot of 'expert' opinion via the media and can make an 'educated' forecast on who will emerge from the eight groups and of course, my fantasy team has changed a little from its original draft. The goalkeeper is a conundrum as Neuer is rumoured to start over Ter Stegen and who could tell which of the three Brazilians will start so it's Lloris over De Gea for me. You're allowed 20 transfers across the group stage so it's going to be mostly a change of striker with the rest of the team selected to run the course. Of the groups I am backing; A: Russia, Uruguay B: Spain, Portugal C: France, Denmark D: Argentina, Croatia E: Brazil, Serbia F: Germany, Mexico G: Belgium, England H: Columbia, Senegal Should be said that many fancy Morocco to finish above Portugal in C and in H I don't fancy the Poles at all. If England don't get out of their group I will eat my Panama hat!

Even the Russian hierarchy and Joe Publicski said this is the worst team they have ever had and won't make it out of the group.
The 5-0 trouncing of Saudi Arabia should quell such pessimism.
Taxi for Pizzi!

I'm the complete opposite. If Australia are knocked-out of a sports competition, I generally follow England as a second-team. I generally agree with those predictions. It's interesting that people are tipping Morocco to finish above Portugal. I know Portugal are facing a tough opponent in Spain, but Portugal have quality all across their squad and I think they will easily qualify for the next stage.

Portugal v Spain wasn't far short of a classic! Now it's Australia's turn and they face France; I've added Griezemann to my team (just in case, you know).

3-3 yes and now I'm watching Iceland holding Argentina AND Messi has missed a penalty!
Australia were unlucky with the pen against France I thought and can be proud of their performance despite the narrow loss.

I saw most of all the games yesterday.
Australia were really unlucky and can be proud of their display in the narrow loss to the French.
Argentina v Iceland; it simply isn't a shock, I have no idea why people are saying this as they won't be far apart in the FIFA world rankings and Argentina haven't been a tour de force for a fair while now. I'll say this much, if England want to learn how to fight for a piece of the cake instead of concentrating on tippy-tappy football they could learn a lot from Iceland who defended for their lives and were terrific.
Denmark looked pretty impotent until the latter stages and I would have expected better from them; Peru's fans are magnificent aren't they, 50,000 of them in Russia although not all of them have tickets for games.
Croatia put on the best football display of the day I thought, should have won by more and Nigeria were disappointing; Victor Moses, well, maybe he thought this was the Olympic Games and was performing in the diving competition.
I am looking forward to seeing Germany and Brazil enter the fray today.

I agree that Australia should be proud over how they played, however I wasn't entirely convinced about their performance. France weren't really at the top of their game and I feel as though Australia could have challenged them a bit more. I know it's easier said than done, but they had a few wasted opportunites at goal.

Germany 0-1 MexicoNot the end of the world. But it could be if they perform like that again. Neville's 'commentary' can easily be avoided by pressing the red button.

Never have rated Walker anyway, what a plum defending facing your own goal. Could/should have won that 4-0 but I saw nothing to change my opinion that England will get out of the group. Last night they simply got out of jail.

Just typical. Nacho scores a worldy in the last game and gets put on the bench as I bring him into my fantasy team. At least my front two is now Kane and Ronaldo though. Spain must beat Morocco to make it through to the last sixteen. Today sees Denamrk v Australia and France take on Peru while the evening game is Argentina v Croatia.

Australia played quite well against Denmark. They were unlikely not to have scored another goal.

Argentine misery almost complete. Torn to ribbons by Ratitic and co, they have to defeat Nigeria and hope. They do look a mess and it has opened up a debate now on who is the greatest, Messi or Ronaldo. If the latter was in the Argentine side, would he improve them?
Brazil play their second group game later and will hopefully put on a better show than against Switzerland.
