Bit of a catch up, in reverse. I had managed to get through the whole journey home without knowing the score and despite seeing many England fans in the town. Then someone texted to tell me England were 6-0 up. So pleased for Germany who left it late but were the only team in it in the second half and deserved to win. So far I think Ahmed Musa's first goal against whoever it was is the best goal I have seen in WC2018. And judging by the commentaries after Argentina were thumped 0-3 by Croatia, why are we meant to feel sorry for such a 'great nation' exiting the tournament? Falkland Islands, Hand Of God... don't cry for me, Argentina - the truth is, I never loved you.

Watching the World Cup at the moment. Peru are currently in the lead over Australia at half-time. We need to win to qualify for the Round of 16.

...and unfortunately, Australia lost to Peru 2-0.
Even though I could (and hope to) be proven wrong, I would not be overly surprised if the Socceroos have just played in their last FIFA World Cup for some time after barely qualifying for Russia 2018!

The Germans had more or less the team from four years ago. Other countries have caught up and improved. Perhaps the group stage exit is not so much of a shock or surprise.
England tonight. On one hand I can see Lukaku and co ripping them but on another maybe England will resist and get a point, the talking is all about England wanting to finish second for an easier path in the knockout stage that begins this weekend.
Are Croatia the Black Beauty?

Unfortunately, you're probably right. The Socerroos only just managed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup and that's mostly because a few results went in their favour. I honestly can't see the Soccerroos ever improving their overall performance at the World Cup, at least not until Australia's attitudes and governance of the sport improves in a significant way.

ENGLAND put out the B team!
1 Pickford 16 Jones 5 Stones 15 Cahill 4 Dier 22 Alexander-Arnold 21 Loftus-Cheek 17 Delph 3 Rose 19 Rashford 11 Vardy
Great to see Rashford and Vardy get a gig. I'll watch it and I'm actually looking forward to it. Don't know why - it seems as though both teams want to lose so that they finish second!
England maybe would rather face Japan than Colombia.
On second thoughts, I'm not interested in watching a reserve game (see the Belgique line-up) - I'm sure I can find something on another channel - like Are You Being Served? on Drama - starts in five minutes!

Southgate bottled it. Could have played Japan but put out a weak side and got what he deserved.

France have defeated Argentina by four goals to two. That means Argentina have been knocked out of the World Cup.

First penalty shoot-out beckons as two hours of mostly Spanish posession can't separate Spain and Russia.

Ok Koke! Spain are OUT of the World Cup thanks to two spot-kick misses from Koke and Aspas. De Gea was dreadful between the sticks and had been all tournament in truth. Great achievement for the hosts who have put on a great competition so far with only one goal-less draw and some special football. Russia are in the quarter-finals!

I'm stunned (or maybe I shouldn't be) there's anyone thinks England can beat Colombia. But imagine if they did. Then it would be Sweden or Switzerland in the q-finals. Potentially yes, of course England can reach the final but this is England and despite Southgate's approach and all the expectations of many deluded fans I am confident there'll be heartache in the Otkrytie Arena tonight.
Felt really sorry for Japan. Belgians showed them no respect whatsoever, strutting around like we're so much better than you and if they had put their minds to it they'd have been two or three up at half-time and would never have been in the position they created for themselves. After the second Japanese strike and as a neutral I found myself wanting Japan to win and after Vertonghen's fluke I was even more miffed when Belgium sneaked the win at the death. Hopefully they'll be dispatched properly by Brazil on Friday.

Cheats never prosper. It's not always an accuracy but at least tonight it rang true. The Colombians lost any respect I had for their football with their continual behaviour, dirty fouling and even their 'fans' were launching bottles at the England team. The referee lost it completely and Columbia ought to have been down to nine men before the last twenty minutes.
And with a penalty shoot-out it was so nearly same old, same old but after Henderson's miss, the team held their nerve and what a night for Pickford. So many times in recent days I have heard people moaning about his selection and I have just thought - he's our best keeper, pick him and back him - not just the penalty save but remember the save before the goal in extra time too, really pleased for Pickford.
Sweden won't be easy in the quarter-final and they do have a habit of either beating England or knocking them out of a tournament but it's a Sweden without class strikers like Larsson and Ibrahimovic and I do give England a lot of hope in their bid to reach the semis.
No true sports fan will miss or feel any sympathy whatsoever for Colombia. Load of dirty cheats and got what they deserved - nothing.

I'm glad England won in the end. England are my second team, so I always like to see them perform well at the World Cup.

Each of the quarter-finals have teams whose names are made up of either six or seven letters.
FRANCE (6) v URUGUAY (7) BRAZIL (6) v BELGIUM (7) SWEDEN (6) v ENGLAND (7) RUSSIA (6) v CROATIA (7)
6 + 7 = 13. The saying "IT'S COMING HOME" has 13 letters in it.

Not surprised at Brazil, I mean, they hardly looked like world beaters but I was surprised at Belgium's quality. Can they beat France? It's England v Sweden later and we will be on the beach with hopefully no radios and nobody the slightest bit interested in football. We can watch the highlights later.
