I would say musically, it would go like this:
Early 2010's (2009-2013): Electropop (Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna), dubstep (Skrillex, Excision, Skream), neo-teen pop (Justin Bieber, One Direction, Rebecca Black)
Mid 2010's (2013-2017): EDM (Avicii, Martin Garrix, Marshmello), indie folk (Arctic Monkeys, Fleet Foxes, The Lumineers), a newer style of neo-teen pop (Jacob Sartorius, JoJo Siwa, Shawn Mendes)
Late 2010's (2017-present): Trap (Future, Lil Yachty, Travis Scott), vaporwave (2814, Blank Banshee, HOME) *The fringe right popularizes fringe black metal (Absurd, Graveland, Dub Buk) and fringe vaporwave (Cybernazi, Xurious). *The fringe left popularizes the still-in-style but declining indie folk (Arctic Monkeys, Fleet Foxes, The Lumineers).

Thinking of it, not sure why Teen Pop would be representative for the mid 2010s actually. Miley Cyrus came and made it instantly uncool again.
Anyway if I had to do:
Early 2010s (2009-early 2013): Electro-Pop (Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Taoi Cruz, Black-Eyed Peas, ...), Pop Rap (B.o.B., Eminem, Wiz Khalifa, ...), Brostep/Dubstep (Skrillex, Skream, Afrojack), Electro-House (David Guetta's productions), Teen Pop Renaissance (Justin Bieber, One Direction, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen), Indie Pop (fun., Gotye, Foster the Poeple, Awolnation, Imagine Dragons)
Mid 2010s (mid 2013-early 2016): Trap-EDM (Baauer, DJ Snake), Progressive House (Avicci, Swedish House Mafia, Zedd), Anti-Teen Pop (Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Revival Selena Gomez, Cool for the Summer Demi Lovato), Tropical House (Justin Bieber, OMI, Clean Bandit), Disco/Funk Revival (Daft Punk, Bruno Mars, Robin Thicke)
Late 2010s (mid 2016-today): Trap Rap (Migos, Cardi B, Desiigner, ...), Cloud Rap/Sad Rap (Future, Post Malone, Lil Uzi Vert, Juice WRLD, ...), Alternative R&B (SZA, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Zayn), Latin Pop (Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee), continuation of the mid 2010s styles more ot less

I generally agree with Mr Shruggie's assessment of the different music eras. Although, i'm a bit reluctant in regarding 2009 as an Early '10s year for music, because I believe 2009 was still very much a 2000s cultural year and there are quite a number of hits from 2009 which would sound completely out of place in the zeitgeist of the 2010s.

While 2009 do have a lot of 2000s remnants, it still started a lot trends as well that went on to define the early 2010s which is something imo not to neglect. "Boom Boom Pow" for instance is like the ultimate transitory song between the 2 periods, stuck between 2000s-style of bass heavy club song and early 2010s electro sounds.

Yeah, the emo rap/sad rap movement, popularized by Lil Uzi Vert, XXXTENCION, and recently Juice WRLD, as well as the unfortunate death of Lil Peep. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo_rap

2009-11 - early electropop, hip hop still follows the late 2000s status quo
2011-14 - EDM, early trap, indie/hipster music
2014-16 - DJ Mustard beats, slower EDM, dancehall, absence of rock mainstream rock becomes more noticeable
