news.avclub.com/new-study-shows-that-people-stop-listening-to-new-music-1798279117I came across this interesting article earlier this afternoon. A study has revealed that people, on average, stop listening to new music at the age of 33. The study is based mainly on data collected from U.S. Spotify users. It found that people are most in-tune with Top-40 music in their teens: Based off my observations, I think this study is mostly accurate. For instance, my Dad was born in 1967 and he coincidentally fell out of touch with music back in 2000 (when he was 33), around the time artists such as Britney Spears, Blink-182 and NSYNC were at the peak of their careers. However, with that said, he still loosely followed Top-40 music until about 2002 (although he doesn't acknowledge it). This is just my personal opinion, but I personally believe the teens of today are more likely to fall out of touch with music earlier than previous generations, due to how homogeneous the Top-40 charts are now and the fact that entertainment is consumed in so many ways (e.g streaming, physical media). I know the charts have lacked diversity in previous eras (e.g the Early '60s), but because society wasn't as fragmented back then, it's likely that unsatisfied teens were still in touch with music in some form, especially considering how music was viewed as being a popular pasttime. Generally speaking, if you're not a fan of EDM, Indie-Pop or Trap, there's a good chance that you're not going to closely follow the current mainstream charts. The only reason why I am still in touch with Top-40 music, is because I have such a strong interest in music and I like talking about pop culture over time. Otherwise, I wouldn't choose to listen to Top-40 music at all.

I lost interest in new music before the age of 33. At what age did you lose interest in new music?
