American rapper, XXXTentacion, has been shot dead in Florida at the age of 20. He was an up and coming rapper who achieved several hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and a worldwide hit in the form of his Early 2018 single, "Sad".
Several people online are regarding his death as being a generation defining event. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but was XXXTentacion ever that popular or influential? His death has not been mentioned in the news, or on the radio. Maybe he was only a well-known figure in the US? XXXTentacion did have a Top-40 hit here in Australia in the form of "Sad" (which peaked at #9 on our charts), but I have never heard it being played on Top-40 radio or mentioned in any way.

He was definitely popular in my high school. He was one of the most popular rappers among people around my age. Even my friend who's six years younger than me really liked his songs. My sister born in late 1996 says she doesn't really listen to his songs though and said that he wasn't really that famous.

Was not much into his music but he didn’t deserve to be killed, I would hate to see how his family and friends are taking this. R.I.P. my brother.

I still remember when Look At Me was everywhere and at my middle school. Yeah. That song was everywhere in my freshman year of HS.

Its sad but I never liked his music and I really don't think of this as a generation defining event.

Maybe, it's just me but he seemed to be popular with people born after the year 2000, especially with 2001-2006 borns.
I only barely knew about him and he wasn't popular among my friends. I also didn't like his music from what I've heard which is very little.
Additionally, he was an abuser...so yeah.

Most people in my year level knew him, however, they didn't like his music. It is sad, though, he has done some questionable things in the past.

I don't think anyone in my year group (Class of 2017) was interested in his music, at least as far as I know. Then again, XXXTentacion hadn't yet made a name for himself, so most people were probably unaware of him.

Just out of curiosity, has his passing made the news headlines in other people's areas? It still hasn't been mentioned in the news at all here.

Even the seniors last year when I was a freshman (late 1998-mid-1999 borns) were really into his music. It was pretty difficult to find someone born after 1999 who didn’t like his music let alone never heard of him. I’d actually say 2003 and 2004 borns are the most quintessential XXXTentacion fans over here lmao.
