Maybe, it's just me but he seemed to be popular with people born after the year 2000, especially with 2001-2006 borns. I only barely knew about him and he wasn't popular among my friends. I also didn't like his music from what I've heard which is very little. Additionally, he was an abuser...so yeah. Most people in my year level knew him, however, they didn't like his music. It is sad, though, he has done some questionable things in the past. Most people in my grade that I know hate him. I don't think anyone in my year group (Class of 2017) was interested in his music, at least as far as I know. Then again, XXXTentacion hadn't yet made a name for himself, so most people were probably unaware of him. Y’all go to a very different high school than me then. Even the seniors last year when I was a freshman (late 1998-mid-1999 borns) were really into his music. It was pretty difficult to find someone born after 1999 who didn’t like his music let alone never heard of him. I’d actually say 2003 and 2004 borns are the most quintessential XXXTentacion fans over here lmao. I'm not in high school anymore. I haven't in high school for over a year lol. I believe that 2002-2004 borns are/were the most "quintessential" XXXTentacion fans.

Just out of curiosity, has his passing made the news headlines in other people's areas? It still hasn't been mentioned in the news at all here. Same here. For some reason I'm yet to have seen any major news networks mention his death. I have no idea why. That's why I seriously question how this can possibly be regarded as a generation defining event. It just hasn't made a huge impact across the wider population.

Hard to believe it has almost been a year since XXXTentacion was shot dead. This was always going to happen, but I've noticed that he has already become somewhat of a martyr figure within the Soundcloud/Trap scene. He has become a bigger name in death than he ever was while he was still alive. It's a shame, because he was a complete scumbag when he was alive. Someone who physically abused others does not deserve any respect.

I do agree, but I think one thing that sets XXXTentacion apart is that he was never an influential figure from a cross-generational perspective. His death never even made the news on television or the radio. He can't be compared to someone like John Lennon or Kurt Cobain, who were both responsible for changing the trajectory of pop culture and have fan bases right across the age spectrum.

In four days, it will be exactly one year later after he died. I still remember it like yesterday.

Am I completely out of touch with pop culture? Because I don't remember hearing even one song from XXXTentacion played on the radio or TV, etc. But if this bit is true... he was a complete scumbag when he was alive. Someone who physically abused others ...then it's probably for the best that this "artist" hasn't recieved much (if any) coverage in the mainstream media, at least in Australia. Makes me wonder if the lyrics of his songs were filled with highly explicit content and therefore completely unsuitable for radio/TV airplay.

All it does is highlight how fragmented our world has truly become. XXXTentacion actually had a Top-10 hit that stayed on the ARIA Charts for 32 weeks, but it didn't receive any airplay on Top-40 radio at all. I never heard it mentioned or played on radio once. The song only became a hit as a result of XXXTentacion's huge following on Soundcloud and within the Trap-Rap scene.

If i'm old, what would that make you? A fossil, lol. In all seriousness, you're right though. Most young people choose not to listen to the radio at all nowadays.
