Why do some people believe that there is this big "late 2006 shift"?
The whole thing has essentially become a meme on inthe00s.

It can all be contributed to the posts made by two members on that forum (I won't name who they are, but they're not on Popedia). It's completely ridiculous. I don't really bother going on that forum now anyway.

My guess is probably because of the release of the PS3 and Wii. Or maybe because late 2006 was technically the start of the late 2000's, even though it wasn't that drastically different from the mid-2000's. Late 2006-mid 2007 was still the time period before the Great Recession despite there being some signs of it coming.

Because late 2006 was when early '10s culture (YouTube, Facebook, David Guetta, Smosh, HDTV, Blu-ray, Daniel Craig as 007, Online gaming etc.) had developed enough that it had a fairly coherent identity.

There was a lot of early enthusiasm in the thread about the late 2006 shift, and from there it just kept getting referenced again and again, with the thread itself being revived enough times that it's ridiculously huge now.
