I am interested to hear other people's opinions on this topic. When do you think widescreen music videos became standard?
I would personally consider 2008 to be the year when widescreen music videos became standard. I'm not aware of any music videos from 2008 that were produced in 4:3 ratio. I know music videos had been produced in widescreen for many years prior to 2008, but 4:3-produced music videos were still standard as well. In fact, some (albeit, not many) of the biggest hits of 2007 were still filmed in 4:3 ratio:

I disagree that 2008 was the first year. Lots of the music videos for the top hits of 2008 were produced in 4:3 ratio.
in 2009 it became more common to have a widescreen music video. There was still a lot of 4:3 videos though. Even the top song of the year was 4:3.

Some point in 2007, if my memory serves me right. Maybe 2008.

Probably the Late 2000s, around the same time that TV in widescreen/HD became the standard in the US?
I know America was largely behind the UK and Australia (no doubt other countries too) when it came to broadcasting TV in widescreen.

I would be interested to know when widescreen and HD became standard in the US as well. I remember Australia mostly transitioned to widescreen around 2008, but I can distinctively remember many American shows were still produced in 4:3 ratio for quite a while after that.

In my mind 2010 was the first full HD year with no 4:3 whatsoever, 2009 still had two huge hits, Pokerface and Boom Boom Pow, that were filmed in 4:3 and I saw their respective clips so many times on tv, my brain automatically registered as a year 4:3 was still common.

Yeah, I tend to agree in regards to 2010 being the first year when music videos were filmed exclusively in widescreen. I personally don’t really remember seeing any 4:3 music videos after 2008, but in retrospect, there definitely were still some songs which had music videos filmed in 4:3. Another hit from 2009 that was filmed in 4:3 was “Gives You Hell” by the All American Rejects.

Aqua (the group who did “Barbie Girl” and “Doctor Jones”) with their music videos being in “Aquascope”, complete with (generic) movie-like elements and plots. The idea of a widescreen music video was never heard at the time except for their managers.
