I've been thinking about creating a topic like this for quite some time, but I wasn't sure if it would be worthwhile. What type of music did you like/dislike at different stages of your life? How has your taste in music developed over time?
For me, it would look like this:
Ages 0-3 (1999-2002):
* My interest in music was mostly confined to just liking Hi-5, The Wiggles etc.
* Apparently, I really liked "Blue" by Eiffel 65 when I was 2-3 years old, because of the blue alien people in the music video.
* I started to become consciously aware of contemporary music around Late 2002. As a result, I have nostalgia for songs such as "Sk8er Boi", "A Little Less Conversation" and "Dilemma".
* To add on from that last point, I also started to like Linkin Park at that time as well. My Mum played Hybrid Theory in the car and that's how I became interested in them.
Age 4 (2003):
* I can remember listening to "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer on the radio and liking it.
* My favourite song at the time was Linkin Park's "Faint". Meteora was released just two weeks after my 4th birthday and that consolidated my interest in the band.
* At a party I went to, "Mambo No.5" was played over the loud speakers and I didn't like it.
* I remember seeing an ad for John Farnham's "farewell" tour on TV (one of many ). Hearing "You're The Voice" made me feel upset.
* I liked "Move Your Feet" by Junior Senior.
Age 5 (2004):
* My Dad introduced me to Pearl Jam when I was 5 years old, which in turn, spurred my interest in alternative-rock. "Alive" really resonated with me and it soon became my favourite song at the time.
* A workmate of Mum's would burn new Top-40 songs onto disc for her and we would often listen to them in the car. "We Used To Be Friends" and "Left Outside Alone", were two songs that I particularly enjoyed listening to.
* This is pretty embarrassing, in retrospect, but I liked Shannon Noll's music at the time. My Mum even bought me his debut CD and I liked listening to it in the car.
* Thanks to my parents listening to them in the car, I was introduced to bands such as Soundgarden, Live, Garbage, The Smashing Pumpkins, Def Leppard, Collective Soul and The Beatles.
* Listening to "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind made me feel upset and even put me on the verge of crying.
* I hated Evanescence.
Age 6 (2005):
* Yes, I will admit, I did like "Axel F" by Crazy Frog. I even had a Crazy Frog MP3 toy which I got from ordering a Happy Meal from McDonalds.
* Mezmerize introduced me to System of a Down and, as a result, I developed a strong interest in their music. "Radio/Video" was one of my favourite songs at the time.
* I really liked "Listen" by Collective Soul.
* There was a Soundgarden or Audioslave song that I really liked as well, but I can't think of the name of it.
* I enjoyed listening to music on my portable CD player on road trips.
Age 7 (2006):
* My Uncle introduced me to "Generator" by the Foo Fighters. It became one of my favourite songs.
* I liked "Ray of Light" by Madonna and "Shine" by Shannon Noll.
Age 8 (2007):
* I remember when Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight was released and I was really disappointed. I was expecting it to be like Hybrid Theory and Meteora.
* I really liked Static-X.
* Just for a bit of trivia, I was able to name every song off Hybrid Theory and Meteora, as well as System of a Down's and Static-X's albums.
* I liked "Untouched" by The Veronicas.
Age 9 (2008):
* I started to take a bit on an interest in The Beatles. My Dad burnt a few songs on CD for me to listen to, just to see if I liked them or not. I did enjoy listening to "Strawberry Fields Forever", "I Am The Walrus" and "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". To this day, they remain my favourite Beatles songs.
* I remember really liking "Where The City Meets The Sea" by The Getaway Plan at the time and I still like it to this day.
* On the contrary, one song I really disliked was "My People" by The Presets. It was actually responsible for me falling out of touch with Top-40 radio.
* I remember when "Single Ladies" was released and I absolutely hated it.
* Age 10 (2009):
* A guilty pleasure of mine at the time was "Love Story" by Taylor Swift.
* On my road trip to the Gold Coast for a holiday, I was sitting in the back seat of the car and I was using my Mum's iPod Classic. When I was looking at the song playlist, I decided to listen to ABBA (just for the sake of it) and I actually enjoyed listening to songs such as "Waterloo", "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and "Dancing Queen".
* I really liked "Broken Leg" by Bluejuice. I only discovered what the name of the song is just a few months ago!
* Ages 11-14 (2010-2013):
* I was out of touch with the Top-40 charts during this period of time. As such, I generally refused to listen to new music.
* With that said, there were a few songs from 2010/2011 that I liked: "Edge of Glory", Somebody That I Used To Know", "Rolling in the Deep", as well as a number of Australian songs.
* Even though it is an Emo song, I actually didn't mind "Check Yes Juliet" by We The Kings, as it made me feel nostalgic for the Late 2000s.
Ages 15 (2014 - Present Day):
* Since 2014, I have gradually started to follow Top-40 radio again. It started off with me listening to the radio from time to time back in 2014, then I began to regularly watch a Top-40 music show a year later and since joining inthe00s in 2016, I have started to look at the Top-40 charts (i.e the ARIA Chart, the Billboard Hot 100) on a daily basis.
* I still don't like the majority of the songs on the charts, but my interest in music is too strong and I am still intrigued to discover what is or isn't popular.
* Playing "FIFA 13" introduced me to "G#" by Kitten, an alternative-rock song by an American underground band. I'd highly recommend giving it a listen!
* I began to form a CD collection in 2016. Prior to that, I only had my Linkin Park and System of a Down CD's, but since Christmas 2016, I have obtained CD's from artists/bands such as Bush, Spiderbait, Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age, Queen and Blur.
