As many others have said, 2018 seems to lack its identity in music so far.
The only real change that seemed to have happened so far is XXXTentacion's death, and even that did not seem to impact the music industry that much. I have also seen XXXTentacion's death compared to Biggie's death (this was one of the reasons why I thought that 2018 has a 1997 vibe in some of my posts on inthe00s), which in my opinion is irrational. Not to sound mean, but I did not even hear of XXXTentacion until he died.
Some have reported that alternative rock and punk will make a comeback later this year. Hopefully, we will head towards this direction later on this year.
What would you like to happen in late 2018?

I don't see late 2018 being that different from now, to be honest. I guess late 2018 will be the very first tiny hints of early 2020's music, but we don't know yet. It could've already happened, or maybe it won't happen until the 2020's actually starts.

I remain skeptical about pop-punk (or rock in general) making a comeback in the next 12-18 months. However, with that said, it is interesting to note that Twenty One Pilot's brand new single, "Jumpsuit", is currently at #9 on the US iTunes Chart and is the 10th highest trending video on YouTube.

I would like to see hip-hop move away from trap and mumble rap and back to where it was during the 00s, with stronger beats and stronger vocals.
I'm skeptical about a pop punk revival. I'll believe it when I see it.

I'll believe it when I see it. I think hip-hop needs to move in an entirely new direction altogether, to be honest. If there isn't a new innovation or sound which can drive hip-hop going forward, I feel as though it will eventually suffer the same fate as rock and begin to become fatigued as a genre. I know hip-hop is arguably the most dominant genre of music at the moment (at least in the United States), but rock was for several decades and look at the state it is currently in. It can't just be a rehash of previous styles of rap, IMO.

I think rock would have probably died when hair metal did if it wasn't for Nirvana coming in to shake things up. I think comparisons can be made between hair metal for rock and mumble rap for hip-hop.

I think rock would have probably died when hair metal did if it wasn't for Nirvana coming in to shake things up. I think comparisons can be made between hair metal for rock and mumble rap for hip-hop. I completely agree. The question has to be asked though; will there ever be another artist with the same influence and popularity as Kurt Cobain? Many people regard Kurt as the last true rock star and it's easy to see why that is the case. The music industry is so fragmented now, that I personally have my doubts that an artist, regardless of the quality of their releases, will ever be as influential on the music industry. I think XXXTentacion's death is a perfect example of this. His death unquestionably impacted many people around the world, but he wasn't even at the forefront of the mainstream music scene. His songs were never played on Top-40 radio, nor was he ever mentioned on TV. I do agree that Hip-Hop needs someone who can drive the genre forward, but i'm not sure if one person can truly achieve that now.
