2011, in my opinion, is the cheesiest year of music since the dawn of the millennium.
In fact, I could argue that the whole early 2010's were kind of cheesy, with some of the cheesiness being present even as late as 2014 with "Booty" and "Fancy", both of which were by Iggy Azalea. However, if there was one year that would stick out for its cheesiness, 2011 takes the cake.
*"Never Say Never" - Justin Bieber *"Friday" - Rebecca Black *"Party Rock Anthem" - LMFAO *"Moves Like Jagger" - Maroon 5 *"Judas" - Lady Gaga (by 2011, it was pretty clear that her time was coming to an end) *"Somebody that I Used to Know" - Gotye *"Jam Turn It Up" - Kim Kardashian *"What Makes You Beautiful" - One Direction *"I'm Sexy and I Know It" - LMFAO *"6 foot 7" - Lil Wayne *"The Lazy Song" - Bruno Mars *"Super Bass" - Nicki Minaj *"Stupid Hoe" - Nicki Minaj (some say that this came out in 2011, others say it came out in 2012)
Additionally, the year had two notable fads exclusive to 2011 - dubstep and Nyan Cat.
Dubstep was popular in 2011 and early 2012, started to decline later on that year, and was basically dead by 2013.
Nyan Cat was introduced in April 2011 and was very popular in 2011 and early (and probably mid) 2012. The whole fad was also basically dead by 2013.
I woukd say that 2012 was pretty cheesy as well, but it was probably not as cheesy as 2011.
*"Gangnam Style" - PSY *"Hot Problems" - Double Take *"We Are Young" - fun *"Boyfriend" - Justin Bieber *"Some Nights" - fun
Please let me know about your thoughts.

I agree that 2011 would have to be the cheesiest year for music this decade. I think the examples you gave are good indications of how cheesy 2011 was, although, I personally wouldn't regard "Somebody That I Used To Know" as being a cheesy song. With all that said, i'm not sure about 2011 being the cheesiest year for music since the new millennium. I actually think 2005 would earn that title, as it had Crazy Frog, "My Humps", "Holloback Girl", "You're Beautiful" and "Photograph".

Even though I personally don't think of it as being cheesy, I can sort of see why it may be perceived as being such.

Not sure what's really cheesy about any of the songs pointed out (and "Friday" was just an internet thing so it's kind of irrelevant here). A lot of them are really, really normal fair for the dance-pop genre. "Somebody That I Used To Know" is even like the complete anthesis of cheesiness to me as far as pop songs go + it didn't explode until 2012.
To me, 2010 was a lot more cheesy/silly with Kesha being the face of that year, than 2011 which was total Adele domination.

"Somebody That I Used To Know" was more successful here during Late 2011 (it topped the ARIA Chart for 8 weeks between August-October 2011) and as a result, I personally think of it as being more of a 2011 song. Although, Gotye is an Australian artist, so I guess it may have took a few months longer for the song to have achieved success overseas.
