No. To be fair, even though the chances of you actually picking up some rapist or serial killer is almost zero, I still wouldn't risk it. My uncle died this way, so there is still definitely a chance. You're actually in the most danger when you yourself are the hitchhiker. My answer is therefore a pretty obvious "no". Your uncle died as a hitchhiker or by picking up a hitchhiker?

Your uncle died as a hitchhiker or by picking up a hitchhiker? He was the hitchhiker. His motorcycle broke down and this was before cell phones.
