This is the debate that we all needed. The most important one of all. Halloween or Christmas?
Today I've been thinking a lot about the two holidays and trying to figure out which holiday is better. Before today I always felt that Christmas was better because of #1, the atmosphere, #2, the home cooked meals, and #3, you receive presents. But now as I become older I'm starting to care less about Christmas. I'm starting to feel that when it comes to sheer fun, Halloween is better. I enjoy going out with my friends and just partying. Plus I think its fun to walk around neighborhoods at like 2am admiring the house decorations. What are your guy's opinions? And also, do you celebrate Halloween where you live?

There's no contest. I personally prefer Christmas and i'll explain why:
Before the Early 2010s, Halloween was not much of an occasion here in Australia. The Australian public have always known about Halloween, of course, and there were some people who celebrated the occasion prior to the start of this decade, however it was just never really a big deal. I only went "trick or treating" once when I was 8 and even that wasn't exactly a common thing to do at the time; most kids didn't go "trick or treating" at all.
In recent years, however, Halloween has become more popular in Australia. Our stores regularly hold "Halloween" sales now and although people don't decorate their homes in Halloween products like people in America do (at least not yet), it is getting bigger each year. With that said, a lot of people here in Australia have a negative perception of Halloween and that's because they perceive it as an "Americanisation" of our culture. I am one of those people. I know Halloween has it's origins in Ireland, but the occasion's increase in popularity has undoubtedly been as a result of our country becoming more Americanized Americanised.

Christmas! Its just way more culturally significant here in NZ. The atmosphere in December leading up to the 25th is way better than Halloween, which passes without me really caring about it. On Christmas you get presents, eat a ton of food and usually see relatives, on Halloween you get.....some free candy . With that being said, and like SharksFan99 mentioned, Halloween has become a much bigger deal here recently. Ever since the late 2000s, more and more people have been celebrating it and since around 2015, people in my neighbourhood have started decorating their whole properties with Halloween themed things (one of my neighbours had a cemetery in their front yard ) so I guess It can be a bit of fun. Although here, Halloween is in the spring instead of Autumn so it doesn't really have that effect.

It has to be Christmas.
Isn't Halloween on it's way out?

Christmas. Halloween means nothing to me at all and never has done, even less so since 2012. The date is too close to the date my mother died.

Wow, didn't expect to be in the minority this much. I prefer Halloween mostly for its atmosphere, Christmas kinda lost its "magic" with me a couple years ago.

Halloween is the only holiday you get an excuse to be whoever you want and eat whatever you want.

I must admit, Halloween probably would be good to experience in the US, especially considering the fact that it occurs in Autumn over there and people generally put in a lot more effort into celebrating the occasion. Halloween is pretty underwhelming here.

Halloween is pretty underwhelming here. There's nothing like going trick or treating on a chilly fall night wearing a costume that's keeping you warm (ofc it depends on the costume but still...)

Yeah, i'd imagine that it would be a good experience. Down here, because it's past the halfway-point of Spring, it's usually quite warm on Halloween.

Halloweens atmosphere and the spooky stuff is a holiday tailor made for me. The fall colors, the scents of apple, cinnamon, and pumkin, cider, pie, and the different haunted house attractions, hayrides, corn mazes, and Halloween parties are what I call a cheerful occasion. Christmas to me is overblown and trying to force cheer down everyone's throats while getting more obnoxious year by year with the store ads to buy stuff. People even die to get those discounts. It's not a holiday I associate with joy.

My mother died on the 29th so Halloween isn't exactly my favourite celebration.

The problem with Halloween is that it's mainly celebrated by younger kids and depending on what day of the week it is you can't really party late at night due to work or school the next day. You don't get a work or school break with Halloween like you do with Christmas. Christmas is better because not only are most people on winter/Christmas break, but you get to spend time with the ones you love, and you get to give and/or receive presents from loved ones. Not to mention the New Year which is very exciting, especially for those on inthe00s.
