Do we control our own fate?

There was a report on the news earlier this evening, about a 33-year-old man who passed away as a result of a tree falling on top of his car as he happened to be driving along a Victorian highway. There were no other people in the vicinity at the time of the incident. Life is full of unanswered questions and unexpected surprises. It makes you wonder, why did he die in the manner that he did? Why did a tree happened to fall at that exact moment in time?
It certainly emphasizes the importance of cherishing every single moment we have. What are your thoughts on this topic? Do you believe we control our own fate or do you think everything in life happens for a reason?
This is just my personal opinion, but I believe we all have a pre-determined path right from the moment we are born. I'm not suggesting that a supreme being is responsible for the decisions we make in life (i'm personally not religious), but whatever is the cause of it, I do think there is a reason behind every single decision/outcome in life.
