I wouldn't normally create a thread based on discussing clothing/fashion (as I know next to nothing about fashion ), but I got the inspiration for this thread by looking at childhood photos of myself and noticing some trends which were unique for each period of time (e.g jean shorts, flannelette shirts). How would you describe the overall look/fashion of the 2000s? What were your experiences with the fashion trends of that decade? I would describe the overall "look" of the 2000s as being very suburban, loose and conformist. Spiky-hair and baggy jeans (or jeans in general) were very popular throughout the entire decade. The Mid 2000s, in particular, were very conformist in the sense that the clothing styles weren't bright, colourful or made to "stand out". I think the fashion trends of the time (which were arguably unimaginative and bland) were largely a reflection of the social attitudes of the era. This photo I think is a pretty good example of what the Mid 2000s were like. It was taken back in 2005. Notice how I am wearing a shirt with the words "street dude" on it. It's strange, because I never wore shirts like that in the Early or Late 2000s. Also, when you think about it, you generally don't see kids wearing stereotypical shirts like that anymore. Could you imagine the outrage if a shirt like the one I wore in the photo was sold in stores today? All the SJW-warriors would be saying things like, "it's fueling stereotypes based on genders" or "it is discriminatory against girls". I don't know why, but I think that photo is such a product of it's time. I have several photos of me (like this photo) from 2000/2001 wearing flannelette shirts and long, baggy jeans, despite the fact that I was only a toddler during those years. I think "Grunge"-style fashion remained popular in Australia until as late as 2002, because there are several family photos of myself and others wearing flannel shirts in 2000/2001 and I remember my Dad told me once his ex-girlfriend's daughter and her friends still thought it was cool to wear flannelette shirts. Nevertheless, it's definitely a sign of it's time. You definitely don't see toddlers/kids wearing flannel shirts now.

Dunno what to add since as you nailed it pretty much, but I guess it would be a nice occasion of unveiling myself a bit by sharing what I looked like in the past . Apparently what I was wearing, especially in the early 2000s, can be boiled down to "lots of oversized t-shirts on top of oversized pants + many different caps". The photo of me was taken in June 2001 according to the back of the Kodak photo: Looks ridiculous af but what do you want Dat Face

Speaking of fashion trends from the 2000s, another trend which I just thought of is jean shorts. Just out of curiosity, did anyone here used to wear jean shorts? I have several photos of me from the Early-Mid 2000s wearing them.

Brand names obviously displayed on clothing and preppy was in. A&F, American Eagle, Aeropostale, and Hollister were the big four. Khaki pants, jeans, and corduroy were typical to wear with said brand named shirts. For the not so preppy Jnco wide leg jeans and Tripp pants with dangling straps were among alternative favorites. Surf and skate inspired styles were also huge and accessories like white necklaces and hibiscus flower themes were commonly seen too.
Hairstyles for boys was short. Spiky hair was more a millennium era trend. Girls would twist the front of their hair in a half up half down style. High contrast dark and platinum blonde highlights was a mid 2000's phenomenon. 2005 particularly. Hairstyles played it safe for the most part.

I agree about the brands being very important. A&F and Aeropostale etc., but also higher end ones like Juicy and True Religion. Towards the later part of the decade, designer denim distinguished by its back pockets was all the age. Fancy sunglasses too, which in some circles hasn't gone away. Through in brand name perfume.
The preppy look, especially polo shirts, was big, but alongside harder, "trashier" looks. Early in the decade we saw a lot of surf and skater inspired looks, quite popular were shark tooth necklaces and hawaiian print. By mid 00's, skate shoes were very popular; Phat Farm, etnies and the similar looking Heelys.
Layering clothes was quite common, with short sleeve shirts over long sleeve ones in the early years. The sweatshirt became an actual legitimized item of clothing instead of just loungewear. Matching tracksuits were popular for girls in the mid 00's. There was a trend of wearing pajama pants of public that may have contributed to the embrace of sweatpants and leggings we are now seeing, perhaps with the current styles being comparatively flattering. Getting into the later years, the layering continued, mostly related to very thin fabrics, which may have been a cost cutting measure someone decided to turn into fashion. Shirts finally got a bit looser in 2009 when jeans got tighter: Enter the skinny leg, which will probably stick around as a modern staple.
Hairstyles in the early 00's were fairly product heavy. Lots of gel for boys, and various clips and accessories for girls. Updos and whatnot grew passé by the mid years, but the overall style was mostly plain, not too short not too long, highlighted flat ironed. Curls were not embraced except for maybe Victoria's Secret style loose waves. Later side bangs and very deep parts were common. Longer hair for boys was popular from mid to late, or until the style became ubiquitous with emo and Justin Bieber in the early 10's. Makeup was very frosty in the earlier part of the decade, whereas heavy dark eyeliner was preferred later.
Crocs grew popular in 2006 and 2007. Crocs were very popular to make fun of in 2008 and 2009.

Oh and how could I forget the Ugg boot, a mid and late 00's classic.
Though admittedly, I still wear mine. Hey it gets cold in New England. But I think that's really the legacy of 00's fashion, defining the "new" classics.

I'm pretty sure that this is just a thing with my location though, as the date spans of trends vary depending on one's location.
