My parents were responsible for me developing an interest in Grunge/alternative-rock. Ever since my Dad introduced me to Pearl Jam when I was 5 years old, it has been my favourite genre of music. As a result of my parents listening to them in the car, I was also exposed to bands such as Soundgarden, Live, Collective Soul and Garbage when I was a kid.

My tastes aren't per se influenced by others, but online communities definitely got me into exploring much more broadly and trying wildly different things and I absolutely don't regret that . I like your poptimism!

My friend William got me into some stuff but he is the only one. I prefer to find my own music. It was William who got me into Bowie.

I wouldn't say that it is all that much. I tend to discover things I like on my own.

Well, I definitely wouldn't say I like things because others do. But at the same time, we're constantly being influenced somehow, and it's harder to genuinely find things on one's own than through a preexisting link. I personally find that my likes and interests often stem from someone else's, even when they have little to do with the original anymore.
I will say, it is fun to have shared interests. I mean, that's why we're all here, right? But to fake it, or at least just rely on others as taste makers and lap up whatever they like, seems pretty pointless to me. Like how is that enjoyable for people?

There are a lot of people out there who are like that though and they pretty much rely solely on their friends or Top-40 radio to "tell them" what they should or shouldn't like. I mean, just because your friends and millions of other people like Ed Sheeran, doesn't mean that you have to like his music too. It really annoys me when people act in that manner in regards to liking music, because I just think of it as being really shallow.

That reminds me of people I've known who actually describe their taste as "Top 40". Lmao like at least just say you like pop then.

You can dig a little deeper to discover pop and hip hop by artists that aren't world famous and heard on the radio who may be more talented than what's deemed popular.

Personally, I'm amused by my own taste. So stereotypically and predictably me.
