I would be interested to hear everyone's opinions on this topic, because this is something that I have taken notice of for years now. When you look at a photo of someone, does it seem obvious to you what country they might be from? Say, for instance, if you were to look at a photo of someone from the US and you knew absolutely nothing about them, would you be able to tell that they might be from America? It has nothing to do with racial or cultural differences, it's all to do with someone's facial features and overall physical appearance. Some people just "look" American, while other people "look" English. This is just an example, but there's no way I could ever imagine Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson or Madonna as being English, even if I didn't know what country they were from or anything else about them. They just look American. Does anyone know what I am talking about or am I just speaking rubbish?

You can't always tell, but there are particular facial features people tend to have. Some groups have more obvious characteristics than others. The way people dress can also give it away.

Yeah I can tell from the way they dress. If we're talking about face, only certain hairstyles or the way they smile, not neutral faces though.

Oh, I'm on a bunch of anthropology forums, so I think I'm good at this.

BTW, I was able to guess the ethnicities of the various Asian tour groups who were there in Korea most of the time.

If we're talking about face, only certain hairstyles or the way they smile, not neutral faces though. How exactly? British people have more uniform and cleaner hairstyles.

I actually tried to show some FB friend I know from various groups a very certain person, but he guessed the country wrong. That guy thought a certain person was from East Coast in the USA LOL. From the same guy: "Telling White People Apart ( Part 1) As a follow up to my post on how to tell Chinese, Japanese and Koreans apart, I would like to show you how to tell different white people from one another. Here we go: 1) American. Usually rather pumped up or overweight. The clothing is modest and of subdued colors. Avoids bright items. Rarely any patterns except if on a T shirt as some logo of a university. The facial expression and look is hard and intense as if always taking on new challenges or solving difficult problems. Walks with a purpose at all times looking straight ahead. 2) Canadian. Usually less pumped up and/or is skinnier. Sometimes, even shorter in stature. Does not avoid bright colors in clothing. The facial expression is more tranquil as if he has no challenges and no problems. Very soft spoken. Does not walk with any particular purpose. Looks from side to side occasionally. Both avoid bangs and long hair. 3) Australian. Much, much skinnier than the above two. Sometimes has bangs and/or longer hair. Does not avoid bright colors. The facial expression is that of perennial glee as if on some kind of laughing gas. Otherwise, the look in the eyes appears to be somewhat vacuous, and the purpose is to have more fun and to socialize more. Walks with THAT purpose which is not a " hard" type of walk. 4) British. A sharper nose than all the above. Skinnier than the American and the Canadian, but not as skinny as the Aussie. Does not avoid fashions or bright colors. Can be seen in pink shorts, and is mannerish, but it does not mean he's gay. The facial expression is that of smug contemplation with occasional nods of approval directed at himself. Chin held up and head moving from side to side when he walks and observes the creation. Somewhat of a shark-like mouth. The walk is that of a leisurely stroll. 5) New Zealander. A smaller carbon copy of an Australian in everything except he's not as smiley and not as happy looking. Looks depressed, basically. The walk is short-stepped and he usually looks downwards, not straight ahead. 6) German. Tall. A thin, long face. Hair can be long or short, usually blonde. The nose is sharp. Often dresses in bright colors. Skinny if under 40, past 40, often develops a beer belly. The facial expression is dreamy, rarely smiles at strangers. But looks around quite a bit. Does not fake emotions and the walk is natural with no particular purpose. 7) Russian. Kind of like a German except he usually has a rounder face showing Asian admixture. Smaller, more deep seated eyes of blue or grey color. Light brown or blonde hair. The nose is of pug variety - almost African or Malay in shape. Does not smile at all except if there is a reason. Looks around a lot. Walks heavy with the actual purpose of the walk: If he goes to work, then it looks like he does, if on a stroll, then the walk is relaxed. The face shows ravages of chronic alcoholism. You may print these two cards and carry them with you. Then you can compare the person you see with the drawings- and guess their nationality correctly.
