I can remember this being a meme back in 2016 (I think?). A lot of people in my year group would make jokes about it, but I never understood what they meant or why it was even funny (i'm completely out of touch with internet culture, as you can probably tell ). I actually thought it was a bit stupid. Just out of curiosity, how did the meme come about and how long was it popular for?

I'm pretty sure it dates back to this very unpleasant, homoerotic viral video that surfaced in 2014:
2016 sounds about right for when I heard "Shrek is Love, Shrek is Life" for the last time.

Ah okay. I wasn't actually aware of that YouTube video, so it's interesting to hear that's what caused the meme to come about.

I hate this meme with a passion. When I reminisce of Shrek, I want to think of his authoritative independence and sarcastic humour, not this disturbing joke fetish.
