Now that we are firmly in the final quarter of 2018, I thought it would be interesting to share our thoughts on what we expect music to be like in the new year. What are your hopes for music in 2019? Do you believe we will see a continuation of the trends which were popular this year or with it being the final year of the decade, do you think there will be a noticeable change in the music scene?
I personally think the first-half of 2019 will see a continuation of current trends, however the second-half of the year may witness a hit single which will usher in 2020s music. I do think there will likely be some change to the music scene next year. It's pretty much inevitable that 2020s music (whatever that may be) will start to have more of an influence at some point. Even though both genres are still saturating the Top-40 charts, I get the impression that EDM and Trap are gradually starting to run out of steam. The two genres just don't seem as fresh as they were just a couple of years ago.

I predict that it's going to literally be the EXACT same as 2018. I honestly can't think of a way it could be different. I hope I'm wrong though :/.

I predict that music next year will still be as crap as it has been for the past 25 years!

I can see the Emo Rap scene and genre still growing in popularity despite the unfortunate deaths of the genre's main figures.
Reggaeton has completely overtaken YouTube and it's kind of bizarre the US charts don't show that much. In 2019 this will probably be a little bit more rectified.
After the massive succeses of "Nice For What" and "In My Feelings", I can see the Bounce genre having temporarily a big influence on new rap releases, while Trap still is the leader genre with slowly a more uncertain future getting more obvious next year.
Otherwise more or less the same things that are popular right now, unless something unexpected happens which I doubt.

I feel like you aren’t going to notice a change in music until years have passed and you start to look back. Almost nobody in say 2016 felt music was changing because it’s not an instant change. It’s really gradual and you don’t usually notice it until at least a couple years have passed and you start to look back on them.
Kind of unrelated, but speaking of 2016 and music, I 100% believe that 2016 was the year music started sounded a little different, and this is coming from someone who follows 2010’s music trends.

I see what you're saying, but I believe it just depends on the extent of the change. I think electropop's decline in the mainstream was pretty noticeable at the time, for instance. It's funny you should say that in regards to 2016, because I actually have the complete opposite opinion; I personally think 2016 was a really stagnant year for music and pop culture in general. I even made a thread about it on inthe00s almost two years ago.

I know this is a bit of a stupid question to ask, but have any Top-40 artists released new songs so far this year? I guess it's probably still a bit too soon.

I know this is a bit of a stupid question to ask, but have any Top-40 artists released new songs so far this year? I guess it's probably still a bit too soon. The Backstreet Boys released a new single from their upcoming DNA album, "No Place", that's doing pretty well. It's okay, but I prefer "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". This song has them leaning heavily into country-pop, probably because it was the country market that helped them make a full comeback in recent times. Chris Brown also put out a new song, "Undecided", that peaked pretty high when it came out, but it's already out of iTunes' top 10 downloaded songs here in America. Time will tell how well both of these songs will perform on the Hot 100. I'm really hoping DGAF-style trap music does in fact start to decline this year. The songs charting highest right now in the US are technically pop and EDM, and even "Sicko Mode" is nowhere near as bad as all the garbage that dominated 2018 before it. There's actually a bit of structure to that piece and there's depth to the flow. It's not just monotone syllables mumbled for no reason by people trying to poorly imitate Migos or Drake.

Nothing on the radar so far, besides a Lil Pump single that will hopefully continue to be ignored.
The most interesting thing going on is that "Sweet but Psycho" by Ava Max went #1 in the UK these last few weeks and the US is starting to jump at it.
