Soul and Funk have actually always been intermixed as Funk actually grew out of Soul and a lot of 70s Soul was done on Funk instrumentation, think Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield and Sly & The Family Stone.
They're incredibly closely related, so this comes out as a bit of an odd observation unless you meant something else. I know that soul-funk is not really a new genre but i can get big
