This has been a controversial debate among scholars and the public for many years. It's the topic of same-sex schools and whether or not they do more harm than good. Some critics argue that same-sex schools offer many benefits to a child's psyche, because they encourage a greater focus on matters relating to each gender. Studies have also found that girls who attend an "all-girls" school are more likely to pursue a career in science or engineering than their peers who attend public schools. This, in essence, is helping to break down gender stereotypes and changing the workforce for the better.
On the other hand, there has been evidence to suggest that same-sex schools can have detrimental impacts on a child's social skills. Because these children are undertaking many years of schooling in a gender homogeneous environment, their interactions with strangers of the opposite-sex can be below par to the interactions of those who attend public schools. These social difficulties can persist well after graduation and may affect someone's own self-esteem and confidence.
What is your opinion of same-sex schools? Do you believe they serve a purpose?
Personally, I believe same-sex schools should be banned. We shouldn't be offering career and educational paths which require all of us to be split into groups based on our genders. What good does that achieve? We all interact with each other, as males and females, in our day to day lives and the workforce is not gender-exclusive. Same-sex schools do not prepare kids for life after school, because that's not how social dynamics work. Males and females live with each other and interact with each other.
It's completely hypocritical. We're trying to achieve equality in the workforce by raising women's wages to the same level as men, but we're willing to send boys and girls to same-sex schools for 13 years to achieve what? All it's achieving is brain-washing kids into thinking that their gender is better than the opposite sex. That's literally what is happening, because let's be honest here, is an all-boys school going to promote feminism and the fight for women's rights? No, of course not. All of the topics taught in an all-boys school would be taught from a bias point of view.
Same-sex schools do not have a grasp on what society is actually like. They are purely a relic of a bygone era in which we should be trying to move on from, but I guess that's just wishful thinking, considering the fact that we are still trying to live in the past by rebooting old TV shows and movies.
