I wasn’t here when this thread was made but here’s what I remember about 2005.
- The Simpson sisters, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan were all over the news at this time I also remember Britney Spears and K-Fed’s relationship was all over the news.
- Watching MTV2 and Adult Swim a lot. I remember MTV2 having stuff like Andy Millonakis (he also got a cameo in the movie Waiting that year) Wondershowzen, and Wild Boyz on Friday nights.
-Going on websites like YTMND, Webshots, ebaumsworld, newgrounds, Fanart-Central, Sheezyart, Deviantart, various forums (ezboard was still around) Xanga, Livejournal, Google Video (Back when it was a separate site from YouTube) and in November of that year I visited this site I’ve never heard of called YouTube and was hooked since.
-80s nostalgia and 2000s hate was really huge during this time. I remember going on inthe00s back then and any year from 1997-2005 was very hated on plus comments about 2005 still looks like the late 90s. Plus back then it seemed my birth year (1990) was the “year of doom”
-The Mcbling aesthetic was everywhere
- the iPod was the music player of choice. But broke teenagers still had portable CD players or had cheaper Non Apple MP3 players like Sandisk.
-the Motorola Razr was the most popular phone at the time. Apple tried to make a phone with Motorola called the Rokr but it failed. But it planted the seeds for the iPhone.
- most teenagers were doing selfies with digital cameras and not phones for their myspace pages.
-Speaking of MySpace, selfies weren’t called selfies then. they were called “MySpace angle pictures”
- The screwed N chopped style of hip hop that was briefly popular. I remember the “Still Tippin” video on MTV before School.
- Who? MIKE JONES!
- Napoleon Dynamite and Family Guy quotes everywhere.
- “Vote For Pedro” shirts too.
- 1337 Sp34K and StIcKY CaPs where commonly used if you wanted to look cool online.
- Everyone (including me) hated Bush and I remember slogans like “Is it 2008 yet?” Or “Stop the Bushit!” Were all over the Internet. I also remember the Mother of a Iraq war vet who’s son was killed in the war protesting at Bush’s home in Crawford TX was big news that summer.
- The “Live 8” concert on TV that July.
-“We Belong Together” absolutely DOMINATED the charts that whole summer. I got so tired of it.
- Other songs I remember that year: “Candy Shop” “Golddigger” “Wake Me Up When September Ends” “Sugar We’re Going Down” “Feel Good Inc” “Don’t Cha” “Run It” “Pon De Replay” “Hollaback Girl”
- R Kelly’s “Trapped In The Closet” was the “Thriller” of 2005.
- Speaking of Thriller, making jokes about Michael Jackson was very common then.
- Heck, “edgy” humor and casual homophobia (That’s so gay) was common for teenagers back then.
- The 2005-2006 school year is when I really started to see Emo Kids become prominent.
- LOLRANDOM! Humor was popular then too with teens. *Holds spork* YAY CHEESE XD!
- Lost, Desperate Housewives, The OC, Laguna Beach, Gray’s Anatomy, Plus many of the L&O, CSI, NCIS shows dominated tv. I never watched nor had any interest in them. The only big show I watched that year was Prison Break.
- The Terri Schaivo thing was all over the news that March/April
-America got a case of Missing White Woman syndrome with the whole “runaway bride” news story. What I remember is that surprised expression the lady had in her photo.
-The #1 news story? Iraq. It dominated the news cycle the way “We Belong Together” and “Candy Shop” dominated the Hot 100 that year. Then Hurricane Katrina happened and that briefly knocked Iraq news out of the spotlight.
- All the controversy surrounding Kanye West with his statement he made about Bush. I think that’s what caused “We Belong Together” to Finally be replaced by Golddigger on the top spot on the Hot 100.
2005 was half my life ago... where has time gone? In my mind when I think of 30 years ago I still think of the mid 1970s. Lol.

Some other memories I have of 2005:
* Sitting against the wall in our hallway with my Mum on a hot day in January because it was the only relief from the heat.
* Getting a free "Chronicles of Narnia" pencil case after getting my photo taken with Santa at Shellharbour Square.
* Sharing my older cousin's pair of headphones while we were sitting in the back of the car. We listened to Shannon Noll, Linkin Park and Simple Plan on his portable CD player.
* Doing a challenge with the teenage kid next door as to who could ride around the cul-de-sac no-handed the fastest. I actually managed to do it, but I stacked my bike and got a cut on my leg.
* Hanging out with the kid across the road sometime during the last few days of the year. I got into an argument with him about something and he said to me that he was going to run back inside and get out his Dad's gun (his Dad was a police officer), which freaked me out. He actually did run back inside his house, but thankfully he never came back out.

- most teenagers were doing selfies with digital cameras and not phones for their myspace pages. That's probably because cell phone cameras in 2005 were pretty awful. It wasn't worth it for most people. Even in 2007 or so, unless you had an N95 or something, you probably weren't going to get good quality on a cell phone camera
