I'm watching "Queen: Days of our Lives" at the moment. There is a part in the documentary which focuses on how Queen copped a lot of flack from the British Press during the Mid '70s and shortly after A Day at the Races was released, Freddie Mercury was labelled a "prat" by one of London's leading newspapers. The British Press are notorious for being very critical and harsh in their views.
Anyway, it inspired me to create a thread based on it. Why exactly is this the case and to what extent are the British Press still openly critical today?

I've said it before and will say it again, I am from Britain so I will know a lot about the British Press. Some papers can be vicious towards certain communities.

They have a lot of tabloids, which basically try to expose the worst in other people so that the trashy people (no offence) that read them can feel superior about something

I couldn't imagine there being too much of a difference between the two countries. I guess the Brits (or Pommies, as we like to call them here ) are just more critical about things, in general.

Americans don't read, so there are fewer tabloids.
Just kidding But I would guess the US doesn't have as many tabloids, because "American tabloid" doesn't conjure up any images for me the way "British tabloid" does. British tabloid culture is truly a thing of its own.

If there was such a thing as an "American tabloid" culture, it would probably be more in the form of celebrity magazines such as TMZ rather than actual tabloid newspapers.
