This is part three of my "reflection" series of threads. In this part of the series, we focus on the year 2001. What was the year 2001 like for you? What are your memories of it and what did you think of the pop culture at the time?
By the way, if anyone wants to create a thread based on a year pre-2001, please feel free to do so. It would just look silly for me to create a thread based on a year that I either have no memories of (i.e 1999, 2000) or wasn't even alive for (e.g 1996).
2001 is the first year that I have memories of. Due to the fact that it was the year I turned two, my memories of 2001 are generally quite vague and insignificant, however I can remember a number of different things.
Here is what I can remember from 2001:
* I have a real early memory (it's likely from early in the year) of going to the Burger King in Figtree with my Dad. I just remember sitting at a table inside the restaurant.
* I remember being in the car with my Mum waiting for a train to pass at a railway crossing. @zampakid , i'm not sure if you remember this, but do you remember the old railway crossing in Oak Flats before the big roundabout over the Princes Highway was built? It crossed the railway line near where the Oak Flats police station is. The vague memory I have of it would have to be from Mid 2001, because it was just a month or two before the big roundabout opened (it apparently opened in October 2001) and I can remember seeing construction workers working on the roundabout.
* My cousin, uncle and Nanna coming over to our house for a visit in September 2001.
* I have a vague memory of seeing the coverage of 9/11 on the morning of the 12th September. I was sitting on the floor in the loungeroom, just scribbling into a drawing book which I had on the coffee table. Anyway, I happened to look up at the TV and I remember seeing footage of what had happened earlier in the day. It was Ten News' coverage and it had just returned from an ad break. I think the main reason as to why I remember it, is due to seeing my Mum's reaction. She was on the phone to someone (years later, I found out that she was talking to my Dad) at the time and I can remember how shocked she was. Of course, with being so young, I had no idea what was going on or why my Mum was so shocked.
* Seeing my Dad mow the lawn.
* Being in the laundry room of our holiday accommodation in Tathra.
* Travelling in the car with my Mum to go to Figtree Private Hospital in June or July 2001. A long-time friend of my Mum's had just given birth to a daughter a few hours earlier and we went over to the hospital to meet the baby.
* Going to my Nan and Grandad's house and seeing Prime News Illawarra on the TV.
