I'm interested to hear someone else's opinion on this. Yesterday I shared "D.A.F" in the "Rate the song above" thread. RockyMountainExtreme believes that the song bares a strong resemblance to Alice in Chains and The Smashing Pumpkins, which I thought was interesting, because I've always felt as though Powderfinger's sound is reminiscent to Pearl Jam. To me, Bernard Fanning's vocals and the band's melodic, ambient approach to alternative-rock are strikingly more comparable to Pearl Jam than they are to other Grunge/Alt-rock bands from the Early-Mid '90s. Take a listen to these songs and see what you think: Powderfinger really had their own unique sound, but if they were to be compared with anyone, I personally think they are strongly reminiscent of Pearl Jam. What does everyone else think?

They definitely sound most like Pearl Jam, even though their lead vocalist is closer to Alice in Chains' Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell.

Yeah, I generally agree with that. Speaking of Pearl Jam and Powderfinger, another interesting similarity between the two bands is that their debut offerings were pure Grunge records, but in subsequent releases, they shifted more towards a general alternative-rock/folk sound and began to incorporate a diverse range of influences into their music. They were also both heavily influenced by 1970s riff-rock rather than punk, as was the case with a lot of alternative bands from the Early-Mid '90s. Anyway, if you or anyone else is interested, i'd highly recommend checking out the rest of their discography. They're albums/singles are rated pretty highly on Rate Your Music as well. Definitely worth checking out.
