To wrap up 2018, here's a video comparing 2008 YouTube vs 2018 youtube. The video shows interesting comparisons between both years: the danced, video quality, ads and the most popular youtubers of those years.

I've seen this video before, but it's very evident that while much of what was popular on YouTube was really dumb and lowbrow in 2008 and 2018 alike, there's more of a lean towards douchey, attention-seeking arrogance nowadays in contrast to the crude, homespun comedy of early YouTube. If nothing else, the success of people like the Paul brothers and Tana Mongeau, the latter of whom Smosh's Briana character is clearly satirizing, makes me feel way better about myself because it reminds me how much popularity is not based on personal merit.
In all fairness, I don't think YouTube today is worse than it was a decade ago across the board. Not only are videos higher quality, they're also much more diverse in content than just giggle clips. Often you can find all sorts of informative, out-of-the-box media well beyond the vapid mush that attracts the most views.

Yeah youtube in 2008 was more creative and simple but youtube in 2018 is more accessible, more functional, and feels more like a social media site than just another video sharing site.

2008 didn't have any SJWs trying to control and sanitize the media.

2008 YouTube had a nice blogsite-where-the-viral-videos-are-at feeling to it, but my favorite period of the site was the early 2010s when it already had a nice variety channels-wise, in addition to how more laid-back community was minus the occasional hate-bandwagon everybody would jump on.
2018 YouTube has fallen quite in my opinion after the improvement it did in 2017 compared to the nightmarish (relative to the site itself) mid-2010s. Maybe I just grow tired of the agressive sponsoring, repulsive asmr, increasing attention-mongering, stale challenges, and dramas and how they affected channels I used to respect...

A twist onto this: 2008: Serval rock songs from Audioswap (Bodies by Drowning Pool, Paralyzer and Bring Me to Life (now known as the "WAKE ME UP!, WAkE ME UP INSIDE, I CAN'T WAKE UP!" song)) were overused as hell. 2018: Audioswap is pretty much dead and replaced by a royalty-free music service which had been active for a while. About 2008 again, this fact now misbelongs to 009 Sound System's music (which dominated Audioswap oversuage in 2009-2010) where Dreamscape is used in a comedic manner although the old Audioswap music is now monterised.

In all fairness, I don't think YouTube today is worse than it was a decade ago across the board. Not only are videos higher quality, they're also much more diverse in content than just giggle clips. Often you can find all sorts of informative, out-of-the-box media well beyond the vapid mush that attracts the most views. You also have to consider the age demographic this content is targeted towards. Typically shows like Fred, Smosh, Jake Paul, Logan Paul, etc are targeted towards primarily teenagers and maybe college students. They are definitely targeting a primarily below age 25 audience. People who grew up with 2008 YouTube aren't going to like Jake Paul because they no longer fall into that demographic.
I think today's YouTube is better in some ways and worse in others. It's much more accessible and I would say it's far more diverse than it was in 2008. However, it's become so commercialized that you don't get the kind of unique, creative content that you used to.

Oh, and YouTubes commenting and Copyright systems weren't a complete load of shit. (Pardon the language).
