I’m really struggling to come up with threads to start when I create this one I think! Anyways. If you can remember, what VCR’s did you and your family own while you were growing up, or for some of us, what are you still using to this day (i.e. brands, specs etc.)? Unfortunately, I no longer have the owner manuals for any of these, but I found some of them online, surprisingly. Here’s what my family had with a rough date to when it was bought (I’m pretty sure this is all of them anyways): (owned since early 1990s to present) Akai VS-G745 (video:4heads audio:2heads SP/LP) elektrotanya.com/cgi-bin/download2.cgi?fid=329501&file=akai_vs-g740_g745_g746_g755_g757_g855_g856_g858_vcr_sm.pdf(bought early to mid 2000s) Panasonic NV-VP31 (video:4heads audio:2heads SP/LP) www.manualslib.com/manual/119923/Panasonic-Nv-Vp31.html(bought late 1990s) NEC VN-204 (video:2heads audio:2 heads SP) - I couldn’t find the owner manual for this one and the one I owned was black not silver like the image below. (bought mid 2000s) Dick Smith [DSE] (video:4heads audio:2heads) - I couldn’t remember or find the model number nor the owner manual for this one. (owned since mid-2009) LG V271 (video:4heads audio:2heads SP/LP) gscs-b2c.lge.com/downloadFile?fileId=KROWM000188925.pdfTo sum up, out of these, I found the Panasonic to be the best one that I ever owned (followed by the Akai I reckon). I thought I’d also mention that I have owned a couple of the latter LG VCR/DVD combo, the first one had sadly come to the end of its life after a few years. Also, pictures of each one: Akai NEC Panasonic DSE LG

Nice thread idea! I've only ever owned three VCR's during my lifetime. The first one was a LG VCR that I received for my 5th birthday back in 2004. There was a special on at the time where you could buy two LG VCR's for a lower than average price, so my Dad bought one for the loungeroom and another for my bedroom at his house. The next VCR I got was for Christmas that same year. My Nanna had bought me a small, 12' inch Panasonic analogue TV for my bedroom (it was my first TV at home), and to go along with that, my Mum also bought me a LG VCR. It was the exact same model as what I had received from my Dad on my birthday. At least I wasn't confused about how to use the features. Then, when I upgraded to a 24' inch analogue TV sometime in 2007, I also replaced the LG VCR in my bedroom at home with a LG VCR/DVD combo (exactly like the one pictured above) not long after. I had that LG VCR/DVD combo for about 3 years. The only reason why I got rid of it is because I upgraded to a new 32' Panasonic LCD TV (which I still have to this day) in Early 2011 and it has an in-built DVD player, so I didn't see the sense in keeping the VCR/DVD combo. I still have the LG VCR player that I received back in March 2004 and that's what I use to convert my VHS recordings. I'll get a picture of it and upload it onto here in the next day or two.

I've owned about 5 VCR's during this TV hobby. My first VCR I've received was some ALDI branded (i don't know the actual brand name) VCR that I got in 2004 from my parents to watch tapes, I've started to do my own recordings in 2005 after I was taught by mum who use to do recordings all the time, I owned that VCR until 2008 until it died on me while I was watching a 2005 recording of Richie Rich. The second VCR that I got for free from my grandparents was a 'LG FC930W' when they discontinued using it in 2008, I've used that until 2014 when unfortunately it started to chew tapes. The 3rd VCR that I got was a AKAI VCR (don't know the model number) from a garage sale for $3 in 2014, it was a good VCR but the only negative was that it's mono only and I have quite a number of tapes that are Hi-Fi stereo, I still own it as of now just keeping it as a spare VCR. The 4th VCR I got was a Samsung VCR that I bought from the Salvos for $10 in April 2017. It was a good VCR until recently it began to fail on me, so off to the bin it went. And finally the 5th VCR I got currently is a Panasonic (NV-FJ620) Superdrive VCR I again bought from the Salvos for $10 a few months ago, and it runs beautifully.

We both have had around the same amount then. Funny that! Yep, I should've mentioned that the NEC I had was a second-hand cheapy that was also only a mono and had SP only. It was bought for my bedroom at the time so I had no choice in the matter. Yeah, from what I’ve read in the past Panasonic were known to have one of the best VCR’s on the market (JVC were the best apparently?). From experience I agree, as the one I had was the best of the lot I owned and it was a real shame that it started breaking down and chewing tapes after I’d had it a good 6-7 years.

Interesting thread Idea!
I have owned/used three VCRs since 2015 (when I started converting)
The first was a Mid 90s Panasonic VCR which I still use.
The second was a DVD/VCD combo, I forget the brand because I only used it for a few months before giving it back to the owner.
I then used a LG VCR from the Early 00s from October 2016-December 2018.

As promised, here is a photo of what my VCR looks like. I've also taken a photo of the remote. In a way, it's funny to think that I have owned this VCR longer than some members on Popedia have been alive for. Thanks for sharing. It would be great if anyone has pictures of the ones you own/owned. I don't have any photos of the other VCRs I have owned, unfortunately. The only other photo of a VCR I have taken before is the LG VCR that my Dad had in the loungeroom. I took this back in January 2009. As you can see, it's exactly like the one I own now.

My family has only owned 2 VCR's (I will upload some pics when I get a chance!)
The first VCR was a Panasonic NV-HD620 (since 1998) and is what the majority of my content has been recorded on. It's still in great working condition and the quality on the tapes has remained fantastic all these years!
The second is a Samsung VCR/DVD combo from 2009. I mostly have DVD recordings from analogue TV on this one, but I use its AV input to dub VHS recordings from the Panasonic machine (since its better quality than the Samsung one when playing tapes) to DVD so I can save content on my computer for uploading.
My dad used to own a National VCR back in the 80s until mid 90s, however, I'm pretty sure its in my garage packed away broken but I still have the remote!

I would have had between 30 and 40 VCRs from the mid 80s onwards. Can't remember them all. Will just list the ones I still have and use regularly: AKAI Hitachi ^ they're practically identical, both black LG VCR/DVD combo - exact same as the bottom photo of EyewitnessTV except don't have the remote Samsung VCR/DVD combo Sharp Samsung - doesn't get used much as it's in the bedroom and never in there except to sleep

@sydneycitytv
Just out of curiosity, what type of VCR did you use to convert your VHS content? Also, have you ever bought/replaced your VCRs or did you rely on the one VCR model?

For the more recent playing/converting of tapes, I've mainly used a cheap LG VCR purchased around 2006 - probably one of the last (outside of VCR/DVD combos) because it doesn't even do stereo sound! :/
