While 2009 is still modern and all, I agree that it's pretty much outdated. Facebook may have already been popular, but MySpace and even AIM/MSN were still commonly used. In the tech world, phones such as these were the standard. Broadband was still universal compared to wi-fi, and that texting or calling family and friends were not free. Music wise, hip-hop, rock, and even R&B were still in the charts. Not just electropop. {Spoiler}
The game consoles of the day were Nintendo DS, Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 and the three home ones still had the original version. Plus, The slim/color ones were not out until late 2009 for the PS3 and Wii and 2010 for the 360. The emo/scene, hip-hop, preppy and Ed Hardy fashion, for instance, were still prevalent. In cinema, there were films such as The Hangover, Avatar, The Blind Side, Precious, Harry Potter, and Inglourious Basterds. Infinity mentioned before that film companies were predominantly Pixar, Dreamworks, and the Harry Potter franchise, not the Marvel Cinematic Universe or live-action fantasy reboot craze. For TV, there was the Office, Lost, 24; as well as Everybody Hates Chris, My name is Earl, Reno 911!, The L Word and Prison Break. In 2009, the LGBT was still universally not accepted by most people as well as fewer people were being upset by a single joke or action. Even though Obama was president, the Afghanistan and Iraq wars were still in progress and that things like Obamacare as well as Michelle's lunch plan were not in place yet. The last thing, the Kardashian clan, were not superstars yet despite already having their show by then. Paris Hilton and Tila Tequila were the main stars for fashion and reality TV especially that Tila herself did not have any controversy yet until the feud with Shawn Merriman in September 2009.

It doesn't surprise me that people think 2009 is still modern people thought the same back in 2009 compared to 1999 even though 1999 felt more different than 2009 than 2019. In 1999 it was the height of pokemania, WWF attitude era, 5th going to the 6th generation of gaming, dial-up internet, y2k scare, nu-nmetal, teen-pop, cellphones were still were seen as novelty items, tv's were mostly crt. Yet people thought the 1999 and the 90s in general were still modern in 2009. 2009 is obviously different from now but here are the simlaties.
Both years YouTube had existed. Both years were when Drake was a signed rapper. Online gaming was pretty standard WWE being pg. Texting was big in both years. Both years had a form of 90s internet nostalgia. (90s nostalgia was big in 2009 but not mainstream yet) Touch screen phones were on the market in both years. Everything sucked (both years I remember people being pessimistic about when it came to pop-culture).

1999 still seems modern to me lol, it's dated in a retro way but for something to be "not modern" you probably need to go back all the way to 1969 or something.

Speaking as someone who was born in 1999, my opinion of how recent 1999 seemed changed throughout my childhood. Before I was about 8 years old, I used to think that any year beginning with a "19" was old, so only 2000-2006 were "recent" and everything before the year 2000 was automatically old. However, my opinion began to change when I was 8 and I can remember thinking as a 9/10 year old that 1999 wasn't too long ago.

In 2009, pretty much anything 1996+ seemed recent to me. It was the era of Internet, cell phones, 3D gaming, CDs and so on. Pretty much the same way I see 2006+ now for different reasons.

As someone who was 3 that year it did felt dated to me once the mid 00s rolled around since a lot of stuff that was big that year like gameboy color, n64 and floppy disk were pretty yesteryear by 2005. Pop culturly 1999 did have a lasting impact on the 2000s with spongebob, we smackdown and Ed, Edd and Eddy lasting all throughout 2000s. Being close to my double digits at the time anything from my toddler years felt old to me but modern since I was only a kid then.

I decided to give "Good Girls Go Bad" a listen a few days ago, as I felt like listening to a small selection of songs from 2009 and this was one of the first songs that came to mind. From a 2019 perspective, the music video and the song itself both feel noticeably outdated. Yet, I personally don't have any nostalgia for it. I actually never liked it at the time it was released and to be honest, i'm still not a fan of it to this day.

People have different definitions of "modern" whether you're talking about culture or even personal life. There are many things people mean when they say "modern". 2009 is modern compared to 1999. Compared to 2016, 2009 is noticeably dated. You also have to account for peoples ages. If you were in your 40s back then you probably didn't see many changes.

Y'all aren't going back far enough. Go to 1999. Strictly visually speaking, compare to 1989 and it will look like an alien dimension with those fluffy perms and big nerd glasses. The wonder of the internet will also make it seem light years ahead, even if we know retrospectively it was low-key boring until like 2003. Now shoot up to 2009. Wow we still wear kinda similar clothes as 1999? Some of the same shows are still on? Wayyy less has changed!!! Wash rinse repeat in one more decade. So in time traveling conclusion, it is my theory we continue to compare to outdated ideas unique to the 50's through 80's that each decade undergoes drastic changes in fashion, architecture, visual arts, etc. Different kinds of things are what's changing.

Wait whoa whoa whoa whoa. How can we have the '90s still feeling relevant but the 2009 seem dated? Maybe because I still have personal ties to 2009 (having been in the midst of college at the time), but it still feels very much alive to me. Emo was dying but many of the artists that remain relevant today were getting their start then. Not to mention this was the beginning of the rise of indie gaming through platforms such as Steam; the end of American neoconservatism; and we still had a bunch of high-profile, well-produced shows like Mad Men and Lost.

Not to mention this was the beginning of the rise of indie gaming through platforms such as Steam; the end of American neoconservatism; and we still had a bunch of high-profile, well-produced shows like Mad Men and Lost. I guess it ultimately just comes down to the age someone was at the time and the way in which they experienced it. For instance, for me personally, I was 10 years old and in Year 4 (4th grade) at primary school back in 2009. It was a completely different stage of my life. Fast forward ten years, i've since graduated high school, am currently studying tertiary education and am about to turn 20 in a few weeks. As a result, 2009 subconsciously feels as though it is far removed from the present time for me personally, although someone who is just a few years older/younger than me would likely have a completely different perception of it. It's strange though, because even though my life has drastically changed over those years, I also perceive 2009 from the perspective that it simply doesn't seem like it was a decade ago. I agree, it does still feel recent to some extent.
