I got the idea for this after a conversation I had with rainbow and mwalker96 on the Popedia Discord Chat. I'm personally of the opinion that someone's age can have a significant influence on a person's music preferences. An 18 year old is more likely to like and listen to Drake than say, Salt 'N Peppa. Drake's music wouldn't be "objectively" better in this sense; it's just that the person's music tastes were shaped by the age they were when Drake's music was popular and the music to which they have been exposed to during their lifetime. That's why you often hear of the stereotype of children rejecting the music of their parents. I know we have a thread based on comparing Mid 2000s and Mid 2010s music, but I feel as though the topic of discussion is too broad for it to encourage discussion on the matter. For instance, 2004 and 2006 were completely different years. I'm interested to see if there is a correlation between someone's age during 2006/2016 and their personal preference for music. After a few responses, I may even tally the ages of the people who have responded during both of the two years and see if there is some sort of trend. Which year do you think was better for music overall? 2006 or 2016? Why is that the case?
I personally think 2006 was the better year for music overall. It wasn't a particularly memorable year for music and pop culture by any means, however I think it is miles ahead of 2016 in terms of overall quality. Another positive quality about the year was that it had a lot more diversity on the Top-40 charts. Also, here in Australia, snap was never a prominent movement. These are some of my favourite songs from 2006: {Spoiler}

"How come every time you go around my London, London Bridge wanna go down like." Probably one of the worst songs from 2006! In all seriousness, 2006 wins for me as well. There was definitely some rubbish in 2006, but there was a little bit of good stuff too. Even ignoring nostalgia, it was just a far better year. Joker and the Thief is a good tune despite it's frequent airplay. One of my favourites from 2006 is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol.

2006 is not the worst year of the 2000s (2009 would be the weakest for me, while 2005 was fairly weak as well and a close second). Like I said multiple times, 2006 had no contest some of the best Pop of the decade (FutureSex/LoveSounds, Loose, Back to Black, Alright Still, and so on), and was overall a year still brimming with diversity (even in the US where Hip Hop and R&B backed off a little bit in comparison to 2003-2005). There's nothing about 2016 I can say stood out in any particular way, the whole year felt very middling. It's overall just a piece of forgettable mediocrity stuck inbetween two far better years. P.s. I do like the beat to "London Bridge" quite a bit . It's fairly unique and interesting, which salvages the song in some way.

2016 gets my win! But only because I really like Fifth Harmony. Lol

On that note, 2016 was also the year of the disappointments with the charts for me. Pop artists putting out good albums, great singles yet their worst material becomes the most widespread. Expectations:
vs. Reality:

2006 by far excluding the snap/ringtone and certain pop songs.

As promised, here is a tally of the ages of people who have responded to the poll/thread so far. The tally is based on the age people were during their year of preference. For people who selected 2016, I have also listed in brackets the ages of those people back in 2006: 2006: 4, 7, 9, 13, 14, 17 2016: 11 (1), 14 (4), 14 (4), 15, (5), 16 (6) There is a bit of a trend among the results. I think it's interesting how all of the people who have voted for 2016 were born in the Early 2000s. Of course, that's not to suggest that most people who were born in that era have a preference for 2016. It just depends on someone's music tastes. "How come every time you go around my London, London Bridge wanna go down like." Probably one of the worst songs from 2006! You're not wrong! I know there's nothing inappropriate about the song from a 2019 perspective, but when the song was released back in 2006, I remember it actually attracted a bit of controversy here in Australia for being too sexualised. Funny how times have changed.

It's not even close for me. 2016 was decent for music. 2006 was one of the worst! Actually, I think it was the worst year for music I've lived through, but 2005/2007 give it a run for its money.

Was snap/ringtone-rap popular in Canada during 2006? I'd imagine that it would have been, but I wasn't sure if it would have been as popular as it was over in the US.
