While I was listening to music on YouTube last night, I happened to come across this video on the YouTube homepage which had only been uploaded less than 24 hours ago. It was a performance by Post Malone and the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Grammy Awards. I thought it was a strange pairing, so I decided to check it out and i'm glad that I did.
One thing that took me by surprise is that Post Malone is genuinely a great singer and I never knew that he could play the guitar! His performance during "Stay" was spot on, IMO. It actually seems as though he is more comfortable playing a guitar and singing (without auto-tune) than making hip-hop music. From what I've read, he was actually in a heavy metal band before making it big. Post has also performed with Aerosmith and other rock artists as well.
It makes me wonder if he chose to release hip-hop music simply to make a name for himself in the mainstream and to become a millionaire? Maybe his true passion/interests lies with rock music? Whatever the case, this is the type of music that he should be releasing. The video I shared above is definitely worth checking out.

Oh yeah, he definitely originated in the Stoner Rock genre, before going on the Trap/R&B road (I think he was influenced by his friends if I remember correctly?). And his hit "Rockstar" was a nod to his past. A quite nice performance by the way. My favorite performance at the Grammys was easily Alicia Keys tho. She covered Coldplay, Lauren Hill, Kings of Leon, Drake, an Emo Rap hit, "Boo'd Up", a 50s classic, "Killing Me Softly", her hit "Empire State of Mind" and even a dang Ragtime song, all in one go and on two pianos. She's so talented

She's so talented That's interesting to hear! I think it would be great if he returned to his roots and released a couple of rock songs on his next album. Once Trap starts to decline in the mainstream, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if he did move more towards a guitar-based sound. He clearly seems comfortable (and I'd argue that it seems to be his preference) playing the guitar and singing without the aid of auto-tune. I haven't actually watched any of her performances yet, to be honest. I did hear though that she performed really well at the Grammys. I'll have to check them out.
