Why were they supposed to end up lighter in the first place?

No, most of the social movements of the mid-2010s had their origins in the late 2000s/early 2010s including the alt-right itself (and the European far-right is even older was gaining ground before that). Most people more or less predicted some form unrest after the Recession.

I very much doubt it. Even in a hypothetical world where the Boston Bombings, MH370 disappearance, Ebola outbreak and the rise of ISIS had never occurred, many of the tensions that we witnessed during the Mid 2010s still would have arisen to the extent that they had. Societal issues such as the #MeToo movement and the rise of alt-right politics wouldn't have just gone away. Also, regardless of the circumstances, pop-culture still would have eventually moved away from it's flashy, dance-orientated influences in the Early 2010s.
