A thread where we can discuss songs from this decade which had limited appeal/success in the mainstream and deserved to have been more successful than what they were.
For me, "1950" would definitely take the cake. This was quite easily a class above all of the other songs that were on the Top-50 charts during April-June last year. Not only does it deploy interesting instrumental and vocal techniques, but the lyrics themselves are meaningful and have a strong personal connection to the artist. I think it's a real shame that the only country that "1950" managed to chart in was Australia, where it reached a peak of #25 and stayed within the Top-50 for 11 weeks. This really should have been a worldwide hit. Mind you, King Princess is only an American underground indie artist, so I should be thankful for the fact that it was able to chart at all.
This purely depends on where you live. From what I understand, it was a reasonably successful hit across mainland Europe, but it had limited success elsewhere. It was never a hit in the UK, the United States or in this country. As an Australian, I personally only became aware of the song after listening to a South African Top-40 station several months ago. Due to the fact that I was unaware of the song beforehand, I originally thought that "Alone" was released by a South African artist, but after researching a bit of information about the song, I soon discovered that it was actually released by an Norwegian DJ.
It might seem strange to see me positively talking about an EDM song, but the reason why I am doing so is because I think it's so much better than the EDM songs that the western world had to suffer through in 2016. I'm not particularly a fan of this song, however in saying that, I would still prefer to listen to this over songs such as "Closer" and "This Is What You Came For".
