Music-wise, I'd probably go with 2008.
Personal-wise, 2009 was more fun.

Neither were great years for pop-culture, in all honesty. If I had to pick between the two, however, I would go with 2008. I do have mixed feelings towards the year though. 2008 was the first year in which rock truly started to show signs of fatigue and as someone who listens to rock almost exclusively, it was pretty disappointing for me at the time. I can remember listening to The Getaway Plan's "Where The City Meets The Sea" on Video H!TS for the first time and thinking to myself that rock wasn't as popular as it used to be. Rock songs had typically made up a large proportion of the show's playlist in the past, but there were only a small handful of rock songs played on that day. I was also never a fan of the Electropop movement. For all the faults of pop music during the 2000s, at least the one thing it had going for it was the variety of different genres/styles that were represented on the Top-40 charts. When electropop emerged towards the second-half of 2008, it was pretty much the death knell for rock and diversity on the charts in general. Many people argue that the breakthrough of electropop was the "breath of fresh air" that was severely needed at the time. I actually don't disagree with that sentiment, but I feel as though the benefits that came as a result of it's emergence were only felt in the short-term. Music has never been as diverse as it was prior to 2009. Electropop saturated the charts during the Early 2010s, while EDM and Trap have had a huge presence on the charts during the Mid and Late 2010s. This is pretty alarming. I mean, 2009 is over a decade ago now and the state of music has never recovered to how it was prior to then. Music aside, I think 2008 was generally a decent year for movies. "Iron-Man" would have to be my favourite movie from that year. I actually went and saw it at the cinemas when it came out and it seemed like such a novelty at the time. The casting was great, the storyline was engaging, and it also had a clever/witty sense of humour. It put the vast majority of the superhero movies from the Early-Mid 2000s (besides the Toby McGuire "Spiderman" series) to shame. I also thought "The Dark Knight" was quite good as well (especially with Heath Ledger's performance), but I personally preferred the "Iron Man" movie. Other movies I liked at the time were "WALL-E", "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" and "Kung Fu Panda". In regards to TV, as much as i'm ashamed to admit this, but one of my favourite shows at the time was "The Biggest Loser". My Mum and I would watch it together and it was something I always used to look forward to watching. I also used to watch The Simpsons at 6pm almost every weeknight on Channel Ten. 2008 was the year that I stopped watching current/new cartoons. I felt as though Nickelodeon had declined around the second-half of the year and I was never much of a fan of Cartoon Network or the Disney Channel, so instead, I turned to watching cartoons from the '60s. As a result, I started to watch cartoons such as "Wacky Races" and "The Flintstones". This wasn't a big deal for me at the time, because I had already liked and enjoyed watching cartoons from the '20s-'50s before then. Moving on from discussing pop culture, my personal life at the time was reasonably good, for the most part. I wouldn't necessarily say that 2008 was leaps and bounds better for me personally than what 2009 was, but it was better in some regards. I fell in love for the first time around the beginning of the year and my "de-facto" relationship (we both had feelings for each other, but it wasn't a proper relationship as such) with the girl who lived in the house behind me would last until my last year of primary school (2011). We would hang out with each other during class, so much so that the other kids in the class began to joke about it. Everyone in my class had to vote for who they wanted to see as the SRC school representative for the class and I received six votes, which was the highest amount of votes anyone had received. Unfortunately though, there was another boy in the class who received six votes, which meant that we were tied for the most amount of votes. As a result, my teacher voted for who she wanted to see and she voted for the other kid, which was so disappointing for me. I missed out on becoming the SRC representative because of my teacher. As I briefly alluded to though, my personal life wasn't particularly good at times. It was the first year where I truly became aware of my Dad’s drinking and smoking habits. I can remember one occasion where my Mum dropped me off to his house and he had been up all night, just browsing the internet on his desktop computer. About a month later, My Dad had promised me that he would stop smoking and I believed him at first, but just two months after he promised me he would stop, I spotted him smoking on the back balcony when I stayed over at his house one night. I also didn't like the man my Mum started to date at the time, not because I didn't want my Mum to date anyone, but rather for the fact that I just didn't like him as a person. It was a really difficult situation for me; he was the first person my Mum had ever dated since my parents split-up (back in Late 2000) and I wanted my Mum to enter a relationship with someone, so I just had to bite my tongue and not say anything. They eventually broke up a year later and my Mum has now been with her fiance' for almost eight years, so it all worked out well in the end. One thing that particularly stands out about 2008 is watching the Beijing Olympics and also collecting the limited edition Olympics glasses from McDonalds (which I still own). Fortunately, my primary school had installed the interactive whiteboards before the Beijing Olympics began, so we actually watched some of the Olympics coverage during class. It made class-time a lot more interesting, that’s for sure! For Christmas 2008, I received a Nintendo Wii and a limited-edition Nintendo DS Lite. The only reason why I received a DS was because my Gameboy Advance SP had been smashed by a baseball earlier in the year and it was too badly damaged for it to be repaired. My Mum had gave me the option of either getting a PSP or a Nintendo DS Lite, but I chose the latter, because my two cousins already owned DS’ and I would be able to play Mario Kart with them. I'd say that 2008 was the year where my interest in the media really flourished. Although I had been making my own mock TV Guides since Early 2006, 2008 was the year where I began to hypothesize my own TV channels and programs. I have several drawing books which are full of mock TV Guides. To add on from that, whenever my Grandparents, two cousins and I went on a day trip, I would use my Grandparent’s video camera and pretend as if I was commentating on TV. I particularly liked Channel Nine's "We ♡ TV" on-air package and I actually think it played a part in developing my interest in the media. My favourite video games at the time were "Runabout 2", "Happy Feat" (a GBA SP game based on the movie), "Wii Sports", "Nintendogs", "Deal or No Deal" and "Burnout 2: Point of Impact". I've never been much of a gamer (as you can probably tell by my selection of games ), however I did enjoy playing those games from time to time.

the thing about 2008 is tricky guys, like at the time people were starting to get fed up with the 2000s as a whole, the songs on the radio felt saturated and thats why when electropop came it felt fresh, but as SharskFan99 has stated the effect from Electropop dominating everything left a lasting mark that pop music has still not recovered from. This is because rock was forced to pretty much disintegrate off the charts. 2008 if you remember FELT VERY LONG IN THE TOOTH, in fact I will say 2007 is the last year that felt set in its ways.
2009 on the other hand had that breath of fresh air with music............But the economy was finished in the USA at the time, No KB toys, No circuit City, Cartoon Networks Toonami was on the way out as well as MTV's TRL (however that show started getting bad ratings around early 2007)
That said 2008 is most likely the better year for a lot of people on pop culture alone.

The emergence of Electropop was pretty much a double-edged sword. It created the perfect recipe for rock to be phased out in the mainstream, because rock music itself wasn't in a particularly healthy state at the time. For instance, the Emo scene had amounted a lot of backlash at the time due to the fact that it began to be seen as something which promoted self-harm and death. I remember that by 2008, the word "Emo" had more of a negative connotation to it than it did positive. Of course, it also didn't help matters that Nickeblack (who were still one of the biggest bands at the time) were largely seen as being a joke and were ridiculed so much.

I guess personally I had a pretty great 2009 but culturally I honestly much prefer 2008 towards which I have an unfair bias as it's when my interest in music pretty started and in movies pretty much peaked.

2008, and by a considerable margin too. Keep in mind that I actually like 2009 too, but I feel as if 2008 was much more packed than 2009. Granted, that's to be expected of election/Olympic years, but 2008 in particular was exciting in both ways. It was the year the Giants beat the Patriots in one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever, we elected our first black president, and Michael Phelps won tons of medals. Superhero movies hit a high we still haven't quite surpassed in The Dark Knight, AS WELL as the start of the MCU with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Electropop got started off the ground with Lady Gaga and Katy Perry's breakthrough. I really like the kid culture here. Phineas and Ferb, Total Drama Island, Bakugan, The Secret Saturdays, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Johnny Test moved to Cartoon Network this year, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, The Mighty B, not to mention films like WALL-E, Kung Fu Panda, Horton Hears a Who, and Madagascar Escape 2 Africa (IMO the best of the Madagascar films). This was the peak of the Bakugan trend too, that was pretty cool. 2009 on the other hand, gets a bad rap, and to be honest, I can kinda see why. Whilst I've grown on Disney XD over time, back then, I was pissed about it replacing both Toon Disney AND Jetix. CN Real was awful, I think we can all agree on that. Nickelodeon changed their logo from the splat to their current logo, which I thought was lame as hell, and still kinda do (in retrospect it was one of the earliest examples of oversimplified logos). There were also many celebrity deaths, with Michael Jackson being the most infamous, as well as Billy Mays. Way too many reality shows in general came out in 2009 like Jersey Shore, Shark Tank and fucking Pawn Stars. Farmville was lame as hell. Continuing to have to hear about the recession PLUS swine flu really gave a depressing vibe. There were some bright sides though. This was in my opinion a very underrated year for movies with great movies like The Hangover, Up, and of course, Avatar. However, compared to 2008 with movies like WALL-E, Iron Man, and ESPECIALLY The Dark Knight I don't think there were as many hard hitters. Both were great years for gaming with 2008 giving us Mario Kart Wii, GTA 4, and Mirror's Edge, whilst 2009 gave us the PS3's comeback with Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls, as well as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, still cited often as the best game in the franchise. Whilst 2008 in my opinion was the peak of early Web 2.0 culture, by 2009, those days were coming to an end. Facebook overtook MySpace, YouTubers like RayWilliamJohnson were rising in popularity, VEVO was introduced, YouTube went HD. I remember WalrusGuy getting terminated, and in my opinion, this was the end of the golden age of YouTube Poop. Even though it's far worse for kid culture in my opinion, 2009 did have some decent shows like The Penguins of Madagascar and Jimmy Two-Shoes, but nothing like 2008 OR 2010. I've heard people refer to 2009 as empty, and to be honest, I can see why, it didn't seem as packed as 2008, and much of that early Web 2.0 atmosphere was gradually declining (but not truly dead yet). In my opinion, 2009 is a twin year to 2008, both are very similar, very similar vibes, but 2009 isn't anywhere near as good in my opinion.

As those years went on, I thought and still think looking back that 2008 and 2009 sucked compared to early through mid 2000s years. I was 9 through 11 years old from 2008 through 2009 in 4th through 6th grades. I felt like my childhood was past peak age 9 or 10 in 2008. That is when me childhood felt long in the tooth. Musically 2008 through mid 2009 had more variety with rock, R&B, rap and emerging electro-pop. That period was still culturally late 2000s even if it was not pure late 2000s by late 2008. Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009. By late 2009, music was mostly electro-pop which is when the early 2010s came or it was an even late 2000s and early 2010s mixture. More Disney channels shows I liked still aired in all or some of 2008, even if they were past their prime or on their last seasons. Disney Channel’s golden age was dead by 2008 or 2009. I enjoyed Hannah Montana, Replacements and Wizards of Waverly Place. I did not care for High School Musical or Jonas Brothers. Everybody Hates Chris ended in 2009. Spongebob sucked in 2008 and 2009 asides some episodes or movies. Nick and Cartoon Network became fully or mostly unwatchable to me by 2008. Almost nothing to watch on those channels, but Total Drama Island and Spongebob. Some shows like Kappa Mikey, Chowder, The Secret Show were ok. I mostly watched Boomerang like Pink Panther, Perils of Penelope Pitstop, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ant and Aardvark, Tom and Jerry, Nacho Bear, etc. I would not rewatch most of these shows. Economically they both sucked with a bunch of my childhood stores closing or going out of business, teachers getting laid off, people losing homes and prices rising. 2008 sucked more politically because Bush was president. 2009 was slightly better politically because Obama was president. They were pre political correctness, pre SJW vs Alt Right and pre liberals vs conservative years. People started caring more about the environment in 2008. I remember having to perform songs with my class as a choir at a concert about being green in early 2008. 2008 and 2009 movies seemed on par with each other. I do not remember much movies from them. In 2009, I was a year closer to getting out of elementary school. I got bullied a lot and was afraid of standing up to my abusive father. I played PS2 and Nintendo DS in 2008 and 2009, Midnight Club Racing, Lego Batman, Sonic, Mario, Donkey Kong games. Smartphones and touch screen technology were not common place. App store released sometime in 2008.-Social media was not toxic like around 2013-2015 to present, Snapchat, Instagram, Vine, TikTok and iPads were not around. Streaming was not huge. YouTube was still in their classic era. Facebook started to catch on, but Myspace was still the top social media platform in 2008. I think Facebook took over towards the end of 2009. 2008 is better than 2009. 2008 is peak late 2000s and the best late 2000s year compared to 2007 and 2009. I do not want to return to the late 2000s because I would not trade where I am in life now for then. The late 2000s still seem recent to me, but not new like the past 3-6 years lol. There were definitely some sucky aspects to the era. Nobody will deny the economy was awful. As for politics, even though Bush was president people were so anxious for him to leave. I remember there was a push to vote for Obama. It repeated itself again in 2020 when everyone wanted to vote for Biden. I’m sorry your personal life sucked at the time. I liked the era though as a whole, although I WAS eight years old so I do have more rose-tinted glasses.

As a kid in my core childhood during those years at that time, my personal life was pretty traumatic in 2008 because of my parents, though there were fun times I had as well. Culturally though I prefer 2008 more than 2009, 2009 felt more bland than 2008 for some reason.
