Honestly this kind of stuff gets me angry. Its been all over the news here the past few hours and im shocked as I never thought such a hateful crime would happen here. Turns out the gunman, who also uploaded the livestream isnt even from our country and specifically targeted NZ to show that even the remotest ares of the world aren't safe....I just feel completely bad for all the victims and their families, and all my muslim friends. The affects of this attack are gonna be felt in NZ for a long time to come..... www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6811785/Shooter-opens-fire-New-Zealand-injures-four-people-witnesses-say-heard-20-shots.html

Apparently it's the worst mass shooting that New Zealand has ever experienced. It's just awful to think that this type of attack can happen anywhere at anytime. My thoughts go out to the victims, their family & friends, and everyone in New Zealand.

The death toll has now risen to 50.
From what I heard on the news earlier this evening, the person responsible for the mass shooting had been planning to carry out a terrorist attack for over two years. That's one of the most disturbing factors in all this. For all we know, there could be people out there who are planning terrorist attacks right now and we wouldn't even be aware of it.

Its awful to even think that someone spent so much time planning such a horrific event in a way which ensured he did the most damage, I mean he killed children and babies in those mosques, absolutely disgusting. Also I cant even believe the comments of Queensland senator Fraser Anning, 50 people have been killed and all he can think about is using this tragedy to push his racist political agenda. Good to see that 17 year old gave him what he deserved. Kia Kaha Christchurch.

You know what really annoys me? How so many Americans have such a limited understanding of things that happen outside their own country. I was browsing through a forum earlier this afternoon and an American member (I won't name who it was out of respect, but it isn't anyone on Popedia) made a post about how the mosque attack happened in Australia, not New Zealand. How the hell can you mistake something like that? 50 people lost their lives and it made international headlines. It was a terrorist attack, for crying out loud. This isn't an isolated incident, because I've seen this happen so many times. There are a lot of Americans out there who seem to think that the entire world revolves around them and they have such basic perceptions of other countries. No, not everyone in the UK is posh and drinks a cup of tea, nor do Australians wrestle with crocodiles for a living. I don't mean to single out Americans in particular, but honestly, they seem to be the most blatantly naive group of westernised people. Of course, i'm not suggesting that all Americans are like that, but there unfortunately seems to be a lot who are.

Despite it being a 24/7 news channel, in all that entire time they manage to discuss at most 1 or 2 sensationalist topics a day, and those topics are going to be American or something international that relates back to the US. The lack of knowledge of world events by Americans doesn't particularly surprise me. In fact, unless they're heavily politically involved, many Americans won't even know much about the more minor going-ons in their own country, the cable news channels are that bad.

I will say that the news media, or really the media min general here is focusing waay to much on our own country and it is annoying. It feels weird knowing I have to lookup info of other places on my own. It’s been like this down here I think just because of generations of been kind of isolated in a way from other cultures compared to our own that a lot of people just believe in the stereotypes or don’t even know much or the difference between other countries. like with the shooting in New Zealand, many Americans think New Zealand and Australia is te same and that theirs no real difference or interesting things about it, but it’s just the fact that many people don’t know much about it and don’t look it up. It’s annoying but it be like that. Someday it will change. I’m glad you know it’s not every American though, that would be as ignorant to assume that as an American assuming what you said.

www.stuff.co.nz/national/christchurch-shooting/112730284/egyptian-filmmaker-announces-film-on-christchurch-mosque-shootingsAn Egyptian filmmaker has announced that he has plans to make a movie about the Christchurch Mass Shooting. Understandably, there has been a lot of backlash to the announcement and people are pleading for the project to be scrapped. What's your thoughts on this? Personally, I think it's too soon for a movie to be released. The thing that worries me is that if a movie is released, there's a good chance that it would just sensationalise the entire event and it would be making a mockery out of the fact that 51 people had their lives taken as a result of the attacker's deplorable actions. If you've watched CNN (let alone Fox News lol) they report ONLY American news. Yeah, I have watched CNN and FOX News before actually. Their news coverage is absolutely awful. Not only is the way in which they present the news incredibly bias (i.e FOX News favouring Republicans), but like you mentioned, they intentionally skip over details which don't tie-back to the US in some way. Watching them just makes me appreciate the fact that I don't live in the US, to be completely honest. I will say that the news media, or really the media min general here is focusing waay to much on our own country and it is annoying. It feels weird knowing I have to lookup info of other places on my own. It’s been like this down here I think just because of generations of been kind of isolated in a way from other cultures compared to our own that a lot of people just believe in the stereotypes or don’t even know much or the difference between other countries.like with the shooting in New Zealand, many Americans think New Zealand and Australia is te same and that theirs no real difference or interesting things about it, but it’s just the fact that many people don’t know much about it and don’t look it up. It’s annoying but it be like that. Someday it will change. I’m glad you know it’s not every American though, that would be as ignorant to assume that as an American assuming what you said. Personally, I believe it's a sociological issue more than anything. I think there is a prevalent mindset in American society that the US is "the world" and everything that happens globally has to revolve around the US in some way, otherwise, it's unimportant. The US hasn't been any more isolated from different cultures than other western countries around the world, IMO. Whether it's the fault of the US education system or something else entirely, I don't know, but from an outsider's perspective, the US seems to have this huge sense of ignorance to it that other countries simply don't have. I hope the mindset does change in the future, but to be honest, I wouldn't hold my breath over it. I thought significant progress would have already been made given the fact that we're living in an age of social media and smartphones, however it would appear that isn't the case.
