This is the last year before Spongebob and Yugioh became popular. I know Spongebob came in 1999 but it wasn't until late 2001 anyone would admit to watching it, it was seen as a baby show. That's really interesting. I know that Spongebob didn't become the cultural juggernaut that it was until it's second season went to air (which aired in 2000), but my understanding was that the show had been popular with people of all ages from the very beginning? I'm surprised that it ever would have been perceived as a baby show. was in junior high during 2001-2002 year and people in my class were quoting the show

Spongebob was already huge among us little kids lol. This was a pretty good schoolyear for trending kids shows and movies. Shrek, Rugrats in Paris, Rocket Power, Powerpuff Girls, Harry Potter, Spy Kids, Emperor's New Groove, Ed Edd n Eddy. 90's classics like Hey Arnold! were still popular yet 00's icons like Dora the Explorer were going strong as well. Then that summer was the ten year anniversary of Rugrats, which Nickelodeon majorly hyped. And understandably so, when a kids show being on for that long was still a huge feat. The "All Grown Up" special marked a transition in Rugrats episodes going forward and it was arguably never the same after that.

Now the 2001-2002 school year, that sucked for me and not just because of 9/11. 2002 is probably my least favorite year of the early 2000s but mostly for personal reasons than pop culture.

I had to go to my great aunt’s house in the mornings before school, and that summer (She was the town babysitter and ran her business from her house) and I had a hard time getting along with other kids, I also had an irrational fear of tornadoes at the time too which caused people to mock me and try to “trigger” me. (Because giving people anxiety fits is SO He-larious guys!) Plus I had kind of a mean teacher that school year. The 2002-2003 School year was also not great, but was an improvement. Bullying sucks. Now mid-2003 on was much better. It was the first summer I was able to stay home alone and school year 2003-2004 remains one of my favorites!

I was in Grade 3, so I have a childish perspective on it. This is one of my favourite school years. It really just felt like 1999/2000 school year part 2 to me. People my age kept up with Pokémon, Gold/Silver was huge as was Pokémon Stadium 2. Mario Party 3 was big too. It really feels like a sequel to the previous year lol. The big change was PS2 which was really popular. Another thing is that broadband Internet started to take off in late 2000. I didn't get it until later but some of my friends had it, they would go on cartoonnetwork.com to play the DBZ flash game on there. Around this time, Rollercoaster Tycoon came in cereal boxes. I was hooked. This is the last year before Spongebob and Yugioh became popular. I know Spongebob came in 1999 but it wasn't until late 2001 anyone would admit to watching it, it was seen as a baby show. The reason SpongeBob blew up in popularity in late 2001

Honestly, I don't get why SpongeBob is labelled as a core millennial thing when so many of them called it a baby show when it launched. Late millennials (mid 90s borns) are the REAL SpongeBob fans who got into it right from the start in 1999, watched it during its prime, and REMAINED loyal to the show (at least most did). I made an entire thread about this in fact.

It seemed those who were in elementary school/preschool at the time enjoyed this school year more than middle/high schoolers. I think this is the school year where late millennial culture truly began taking off and replacing early/core millennial culture, so that’s probably why people like al and Slowpoke like this school year more than Slashpop and John Titor.

I hated the 2000-2001 school year because of long in the tooth fads and teen pop hanging on by a thread, I LOVED the 2001-2002 school year tho.

BTW, this was when fashion was starting to look less purely Y2K, right? This episode of a teen show is from either November or December 2000 and features a bunch of looks I would associate more with 2001 than 1999.
