I highly doubt that was the case. The world didn't suddenly change at midnight on the 1st January 1999. 1999 was still a '90s year, just like 1990-1998 were. you were born in 1999 while I was in 6th grade lol but on a more realistic note, 99 did set up a few things that would define the 2000s on a smaller scale, (small) some of the fashions that became normalized around that time stayed until 2002, SpongeBob, The Rock as a superstar and the face of Wrestling, American Pie, Sega Dreamcast, Skateboarder revival culture with Tony Hawk games. Britney Spears became a house hold name and stayed that way for almost a decade. Family Guy. You were in 6th grade at the time? You’re really not muc older than me at all, I was starting 4th grade. To the substance of your post, a post on inthe00s said it really well: from 2000 to late 2004 was very much a “1999 time loop.” Yeah, bubblegum pop was nearly dead by late 2002 (and yeah, there were a number of acts that hung around into 2003 like NSync and the much more obscure No Secrets), but the fashion and tech was still very rooted in that time. Not to mention TV. I mean hell, Frasier and Friends - the arch 90s sitcoms - were still kicking around until a mere one TV season before Lost, the emblematic “peak 00s” TV drama.

I think what John is saying is that the core 2010s are coming to an end. Game of Thrones and Avengers have ended, Hipster as a movement is pretty much dead, Gen Z dominating pop culture, 00s nostalgia kicking in, 2020s election already making headlines, all-screen smartphones, loose-clothing becoming popular. All of this is happening in 2019, and we are not even halfway there.

Loose clothing? Maybe I don’t get out much due to work and baby, I haven’t really noticed.
