Since the final season of Game of Thrones premiered just a few days ago, I thought it would be fitting to create a thread based on us discussing our overall thoughts on television in the 2010s. How would you sum up your overall thoughts on television this decade? What are/were your favourite '10s series?
For me personally, I have more of an appreciation of 2010s TV in terms of the way in which television itself has developed over the course of this decade. Television is the best it has ever been, at least speaking from a technological perspective. Watching an episode of Game of Thrones is basically like a cinematic experience in itself. Even if you're not a fan of the shows that have defined the 2010s, you've at least got to acknowledge how stunning the visual and audio effects are in these shows. I mean, think of it this way; 4:3 ratio was still standard back in 2008. Now TV shows are produced in 1440p HD or even 3D!
Despite what I have stated above, there are some shows that I genuinely like. I first started to watch The Walking Dead back when I was 12 and it quickly became one of my favourite TV series. The storylines were so compelling and engaging. IMO, TWD was as the peak of it's powers right from the moment the series debuted to the premiere of Season 7, which was controversially when Glen and Abraham were killed off. The show has been on a steady decline since then and the final nail in the coffin for me was when Rick somehow survived the bridge explosion and was rescued by a helicopter. It's a shadow of it's former self.
Game of Thrones is a series that I have never been able to take to, in all honesty. When it comes to TV shows and novels, fantasy is a genre/style that has simply never taken my interest, so the series didn't exactly appeal to me when it was starting to receive rave reviews around Seasons 3-4. I have seen several full episodes of it though. My Mum and her fiance' are fans of the series, so I've watched bits and pieces of it when I happen to be in the loungeroom when they watch it. I can definitely see the appeal in the series. I actually think that if I started to watch the series from the first episode, I might actually get into it. It is a great quality show.
I've started to appreciate Sons of Anarchy more and more as well. Again, it's a series that I have watched a fair bit of thanks to my Mum being a fan of it, and the more times I watch it, the more I start to become engaged in the characters and all the sub-plots that occur throughout the seasons.
