I heard rumours about this and I'm glad it's true. It hasn't started yet it seems, but I look forward to uploading more and not deleting things because they only got 10 likes 😂

Advertisers aren't going to like this. But after doing some thinking on it I think it's a great idea. I think it help discourage groupthink and make people less self-conscious.

I don't think this really solves the problem Exactly. I personally don't agree with this at all. In what way will this improve people's self-worth? If the owner of the account can still see the amount of likes they receive, they're still going to place an emphasis on the number of likes they have received for each post. This won't change anything.

I think the idea is that if others can’t see that a photo didn’t get “enough” likes it won’t make the post seem like such a flop. And if they can’t compare to the amount of likes other people are getting, they amount they get might not bother them as much. It also prevents people from liking or not liking a post based on its popularity.
No it won’t fix the problem, but I can support most measures to tackle the mess sm has created.

I think this is a great idea it stops clout chasers for basing worth on likes

Maybe it would work if social media was a completely new thing and nobody had an idea of how many likes a good post is supposed to get. As it is now, people already have an idea of how many likes is a lot and there's no stopping anyone from commenting on their post "1000 likes! Yay!" like they comment on their number of followers/etc, or asking others how many likes they have. Even if likes are going to be hidden, people will have this existing idea of how many likes makes a post successful, and if they don't reach that amount they wouldn't be happy.

People definitely do judge you based on how many likes you receive, which is why buying likes and comments from bots is a huge industry. I don't think it's so much about people despairing over receiving very few likes, but the insecurity caused by everyone being able to see that your photos having few likes versus another person might have thousands of likes.
So even if you know another person has 1000 likes (and anyone can lie about that), it doesn't lower your own social status/coolness because nobody will know your photos are only receiving 20 likes each.

I got the update. You can still see who liked photos, even if you can't see the number. If you have only 5 likes, it would be easy to count that. I think this is going to impact people who already have 500+ likes more than anyone else. Not a huge update tbh.

Because they won't compare their likes with others. They can easily do so on other social media platforms though. If anything, people may even be turned off from using Instagram as a result of the change.

It doesn't surprised me this would be in Canada given that it's a much more PC country. As someone who uses social media frequently i focus more on comments than likes. Most likes I get aren't even from people who will ever follow me.

It's just a general mindset that anyone, from anywhere, can have. If Instagram hid likes worldwide, it doesn't stop people from focusing on how many likes they receive on other social media sites.
