I heard "Ghost" by Ella Henderson for the first time in years just a couple of days ago and listening to it got me thinking about music from 2014 in general. A lot of people criticise the music from 2014 as being "immature" and just awful in general. I was of that same opinion for years, but recently I have started reassessing the music from that time and I actually don't think 2014 was all that bad for music, especially by 2010s standards. Sure, it wasn't a great year for music overall and there were a lot crappy songs that were in fact released that year (*cough "Turn Down For What" ), but honestly, it's not as bad as people make it out to be (I know longaotian and Telso would think otherwise, lol) and I say that as someone who has always been very critical of music from this decade: I never really thought too much of this at the time, but I have never actually disliked it as such. I think it's a pretty decent song now. Definitely George Ezra's best and this is a song that I will go out of my way to listen to. Channel Ten used this as the backing track for it's "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!" promos at the time. I remember it received a decent amount of radio airplay as well though. Personally, I've always liked this. I actually found the lyrics to this song as being immature back then (I thought the "I wish that I could be like the cool kids" line, in particular, sounded childish), but in retrospect, it's quite a decent indie-pop track. There are a few other songs from 2014 which I personally don't mind as well: * "Stolen Dance" - Milky Chance * "Ghost" - Ella Henderson * "Stay With Me" - Sam Smith * "We Are Done" - The Madden Brothers * "Mess is Mine" - Vance Joy * "I'm Not the Only One" - Sam Smith I'll admit, I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to most of those songs, but that's not to discredit the quality of the songs themselves. Even some of the songs which I have never particularly liked aren't as bad as how I perceived them at the time. Ed Sheeran's two big singles from that year ("Sing" and "Don't") aren't actually bad songs based on their own artistic merits. Heck, even "She Looks So Perfect" isn't even that bad of a song and I never thought I would say that.

Looks like someones starting to get nostalgic for 2014.....HAHAhhahahhaHAHAAHAhaahahahahHAHAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhHHAHahhA Anyways, I never particularly hated 2014, I was just always of the opinion it was my least favourite year of the decade music-wise, however when you line it up alongside 2018 & 2019, for sure its not that bad at all. Even though I pretty much have the idea that 2014 was all about teen pop i.e 1989 Taylor, G.R.L., One Direction, 5SOS and so on, im aware that there was alot more to music that year than given credit for. However, regardless of whether the music was good or bad, I cant deny that I liked how upbeat the music was which made things a little lighter especially considering how the political landscape at the time was pretty much heading into the direction of where we currently are now...

I loved 2014 for the jazzy and cheesy upbeat music. There was also tons of indie rock on the charts (like Come Home With Me Now that you posted).
We started out the year with Happy and ended it with Uptown Funk, and we had Shake It Off, Bang Bang, All About That Bass, Shut Up and Dance (which I heard at a club in 2014) in between. I know a lot of people HATE these songs, but I personally loved the jazz influences and it was fun to dance to. The indie rock songs like Pompeii and Counting Stars were fun and simple sing-alongs. Underrated year imo.

Shh, don't tell anyone. Yeah, teen-pop was definitely right at the forefront of music back then, so I can see why you would think that about 2014. To be honest, one of the reasons as to why I appreciate 2014 a lot more now, is because I feel as though 2014/2015 was when people around our age were the core target audience for music. I mean, I know that we still technically are young enough to be the target audience for pop culture in general, but new artists like 6ix9ine, Billie Eilish and Lil Uzi Vert are mainly targeting people several years younger than us. 2014/2015, on the other hand, just feels as though it is "my generation" in music, so to speak.

Shut Up and Dance (which I heard at a club in 2014) in between. It's interesting that you've mentioned that song as an example, because I associate "Shut Up and Dance" more with 2015, to be honest. I actually can't remember it being a hit in 2014.

The music from 2014 feels very distant. There were many diverse genres that were popular. It felt like it catered towards Millennials/Cuspers.

I guess I've grown more appreciative of 2014 in music since last year or so. It still does have truly abysmal lows in my opinion, but it wasn't a shabby year for highlights either. My guess is that the year was caught in an ongoing transitional period resulting in a weird, sometimes non-descript year for music.
In many ways you could say 2014 is the 1997 of the 2010s.

That's good to know, because I remember that you used to consider 2014 as being one of the worst years for music in all-time.

2014 is better than 2018/19. Not much better, but better nonetheless.
