Yeah, I know i'm being really self-absorbed here by creating a thread based on my favourite genre of music, however I think it could make for an interesting topic regardless. This is a thread to discuss anything related to the '90s Grunge scene, whether it be your favourite bands from the Seattle scene, it's sub-genre (Post-Grunge) or just your thoughts on the genre in general. Feel free to post anything that comes to mind when you think about "Grunge".
Last Friday unfortunately marked two years since Chris Cornell (Soundgarden's lead singer) took his own life. He was only 52 years old. I personally think he was one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. I was fortunate enough that I got to see him live when he made a guest appearance at the Linkin Park concert I went to back in 2007. My favourite Soundgarden song would have to be this:

I've been really into Nirvana's "You Know You're Right" over the past few weeks. This song is quite interesting in a number of ways. It was the last song Nirvana ever recorded, but it wasn't officially released until it appeared on the Nirvana compilation album in Late 2002. This is because it was the subject of a legal battle between Courtney Love and the surviving members of Nirvana, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. Dave and Krist had wanted this to appear on a Nirvana box-set, while Courtney thought it was a 'potential hit' and would be better suited to a single-disc collection.
I've always felt as though there is something quite different about this song in comparison to their other releases. I'm not sure if it's simply due to the context in which "You Know You're Right" was released in, but even the overall sound and production of this is notably distinct as well; it sounds more "metal" than their other works. It's not something I have an issue with, however. This would personally have to be one of my favourite Nirvana songs.

My favourite Soundgarden song would have to be this: This is an interesting thread to talk about. Grunge has been one of my favorite genres of rock music and it still is today. The big 4 grunge bands are Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. To me personally, Nirvana is my favorite, but when it comes to who sounds like it the compared to the genre, it would be Alice in Chains. Take this song for example. Also, when you mentioned about Cornell's death that happened two years ago, there were also two other OG leaders and singers for the matter who also died: Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley. It is scary to think that they both died on the same day (April 5) but eight years apart from each other. Now all that is left is Eddie Vedder… There were other notables ones to like Stone Temple Pilots and Hole but those weren't as popular as the other ones I mentioned. As for Post-Grunge bands like Three Days Grace or Seether, I never really listened to it. There was something about that didn't compare to the OG grunge and made it sound like more alternative rock than it was to hard rock like with late 80s/early 90s grunge. Here are my favorite songs by each of the 4 grunge bands:

To me personally, Nirvana is my favorite, but when it comes to who sounds like it the compared to the genre, it would be Alice in Chains. Take this song for example. Great to hear that you're a big fan of it as well! How did you become interested in Grunge? Personally, I became interested in the genre when I was 5. My Dad introduced me to Pearl Jam at the time and since then, Grunge eventually became my favourite genre of music. Both of my parents listened to a lot of grunge and post-grunge albums in the car when I was growing up as well. Yep, that's true. It's a shame that they are no longer with us. If you want to give post-grunge a try, I would highly suggest listening to the Mid-Late '90s groups. They sound nothing like the watered-down, '00s crap such as Nickelback, 3 Doors Down etc. The post-grunge bands that were popular during the second-half of the '90s generally stayed more true to the Seattle sound and many of those groups were genuinely great bands in their own right. Bands I suggest listening to include Bush, early Foo Fighters (anything before One By One), Silverchair, Live, Garbage and Collective Soul. Here are some post-grunge songs from that era which I think you would enjoy: "Exhausted" was almost a Nirvana song. Dave showed an early demo of this to Kurt sometime during the Early '90s and he really liked it, so much so that he wanted to include it onto a Nirvana album. Unfortunately, that never came to be. Nirvana are my favourite band from the Seattle scene as well. When I was younger, Pearl Jam were actually the band that I liked the most, but when I started to explore the genre more when I was 17, I started to appreciate and resonate more with Nirvana's output. I just wish that weren't so universally acclaimed. When you say that you are a fan of Nirvana, it's annoying that you also get lumped in with the fans who only know "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and nothing else. I don't even like "Teen Spirit", to be honest. It's incredibly overrated and Nirvana had so many better songs. This is how I would personally rank the "Top-4" Seattle bands from favourite to least favourite: 1. Nirvana 2. Pearl Jam 3. Soundgarden 4. Alice in Chains I've never been able to take to Alice in Chains. I listened to "Would?", "Rooster" and "Man In The Box" for the first time just over a month ago, but their music simply doesn't appeal to me. In a way, I think it's because i'm somewhat bias towards the other three. My parents don't like or listen to Alice in Chains' music, so unlike the other three Seattle bands, I was never exposed to them when I was a kid.

I used to be obsessed with grunge in college and I still respect it as a genre, but I fell out of love with it. A bit of overexposure in my case, I think.

Both of my parents listened to a lot of grunge and post-grunge albums in the car when I was growing up as well. The first time I became interested was actually from one of my friends. He was skating with his iPod in his hand and I asked him what song was he playing. He told me it was "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana (I had no clue who that was back at the time). I listened to the full song and I liked it a lot. I then asked my mom if she had ever heard of the band and she said yes and that she had their one of the albums which was Nevermind. I listened to the whole album and was already in love with it. I didn't become involved with PJ, AIC and SG until later. As of right now, Nirvana and PJ are my favorite grunge bands. AIC and SG I may listen to sometimes but I mostly listen to my two favorites all the time.
