In the past few days, I've noticed GWS stories being reported before Richmond stories here in Melbourne during the 6pm news yesterday on 7 and 9, which surprised me quite a bit! In 2017, all they were going on about was Richmond Richmond Richmond and nothing about Adelaide!

Yep, this just about sums up the general interest over GWS making the AFL Grand Final in Western Sydney’s “heartland”. They don’t even know the players in their own team. North Strathfield is in Sydney's Inner West, rather than the "heartland" of Western Sydney. Either way, it'd probably be fair to say that the real football grand final in the eyes of mainstream Sydney is happening on October 6 at ANZ Stadium! If the Giants win on Saturday, I'm still expecting such a victory to be a dominant story in the Sydney media (right up to it being a top story on Nine News + The Sun Herald & Sunday Telegraph doing special commemorative front pages) but only for about 12-24 hours before NRL Grand Final lead-up hype takes over. Correct. I was just quoting what certain parts of the media have been reporting as such. It's still a bit concerning for the league just the same. I read today that they have sold only a "very small amount" of tickets from the many thousands that were allocated to GWS fans, which have now been sold back to Richmond fans. There is definitely more hype for GWS via the media than from the general public from what I've seen and heard this week, complete opposite for Richmond. In the past few days, I've noticed GWS stories being reported before Richmond stories here in Melbourne during the 6pm news yesterday on 7 and 9, which surprised me quite a bit! In 2017, all they were going on about was Richmond Richmond Richmond and nothing about Adelaide! Yes, I have noticed as much. The media are giving them a giant push (sorry about that ) with heavy lead-up coverage, A bit unusual as usually this doesn't occur for the interstate teams during GF week. Is this an AFL tactic I wonder to garner any interest?

Just incase you're wondering how Sydney's 6pm bulletins are handling an AFL Grand Final eve featuring the Giants, Nine ran a report about the pre-match parade and a live cross...but it wasn't before coverage of the build-up to tonight's NRL Preliminary Final between the Raiders & Rabbitohs (and I think even a report about the build-up to tomorrow night's NRL prelim final between the Roosters & Storm during the full Sports report) during either the Sports preview or the full segment. Nothing from Dalts, even though I'd like to be as certain as the game being played at ANZ Stadium that Nine News Sydney will get him to do some quirky colour reports about the lead-up to the NRL Grand Final!
Of course being the network which will show the game tomorrow afternoon, Seven News Sydney went all out with special set graphics (including a "Go GWS" one at the end of the bulletin) and a live cross to the Harbour Bridge for the turning on of orange lighting - Nine showed footage of this a short time later.
Today's Daily Telegraph did have a special cover, although it seems that there was also a later edition with different stories such as the Bunnings underpaying scandal (complete with a rather obvious pun based on their advertising slogan!) and only a special orange logo. Not sure if the SMH did anything.

The media are seemingly loving it up there. Still not sure the general public care all that much (particularly WS). I came across this photo at Sydney Airport earlier today with “Go Giants!” team balloons everywhere. Also, apparently Telstra Tower in Canberra was lit up orange tonight, too!

Weekend Today had a small segment this morning with John Mangos and former Nine News reporter, Chris Urquhart. The segment focused on the growing popularity of the AFL in NSW. Both of them mentioned that GWS winning the Grand Final would do wonders to improve the code's standing within the sporting landscape of NSW, however I honestly can't see things changing regardless of the final result. It is still very much a "non-event" up here in NSW. I personally don't know anyone who follows the AFL or is intending on watching the Grand Final this afternoon.

Also, apparently Telstra Tower in Canberra was lit up orange tonight, too! I wonder if there's actually more hype for the GWS Grand Final in Canberra (especially with the Giants being a defacto local team, still think it should officially be Canberra's team even if they do win today but that's another story) than there is in Western Sydney? Despite all the media buzz about the Giants, I still reckon the AFL Grand Final is very much a non-event in Western Sydney and the Sydney metropolitan area in general. Heck, the NRL Grand Final will probably still receive higher TV ratings in Sydney even if the game turns out to be Storm v Raiders, although right now personally I'm still expecting (as I have since about the first week of August, let's see how wrong I am tonight) next Sunday night's game to be between the Roosters & Raiders. Realistically it won't happen, but IMO both the AFL and NRL need to realise that for whatever reason, we're never going to have one "national" code of football because Australians are so intensely parochial with often fierce local/state rivalries. That's not to say there isn't a place for teams like the Sydney Swans or Melbourne Storm, but I think both codes have got to be content with those sorts of teams attracting the niche supporter base outside of their main markets.

It is still very much a "non-event" up here in NSW. Even if GWS win, its not gonna improve the code's presence in NSW. Even Sydney Swans' didn't do that much in the 2 most recent premierships. I personally don't know anyone who follows the AFL or is intending on watching the Grand Final this afternoon. I'd probably agree with you that no one would watch the Grand Final in the Illawarra area! But would get some in metro Sydney though! It'll be interesting to see how the ratings go. Weekend Today had a small segment this morning with John Mangos and former Nine News reporter, Chris Urquhart. I forgot about John Mangos! Haven't seen him on TV for quite a few years! I didn't even know until a few months ago that GWS had some sort of presence in Canberra. Though, I think they would need a name change for people in Canberra to start realising they have an AFL team, of sorts!

Now here's hoping the Tigers belt the sh** out them next week. ...and they did, 114 to 25. I don't know much about AFL (as you'd expect from a Sydneysider) but if that wasn't the most one-sided affair in VFL/AFL Grand Final history, then it surely it at least has to be up there. This also reminded me of how bored the Goggleboxers were while watching the Hawthorn-dominant 2015 Grand Final. I'm fully expecting to see very similar reactions (except from Faye) next Wednesday/Thursday!

Realistically it won't happen, but IMO both the AFL and NRL need to realise that for whatever reason, we're never going to have one "national" code of football because Australians are so intensely parochial with often fierce local/state rivalries. I'm going slightly off-topic here, but I feel as though the only football code which truly has the capability of being the "national" code is the A-League. Football has firmly established itself as the second-most popular sport in both NSW and Victoria, and it also has the highest participation rates out of any sport in the country. Melbourne Victory regularly achieves 25K+ membership tallies (which is higher than every NRL club except for the Broncos and Rabbitohs), while Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers and Newcastle Jets rival the NRL clubs in membership numbers as well. Would Canberra's sporting culture be all that different from Western Sydney's though? I understand the fact that the demographics between the two regions significantly vary, but rugby league is the dominant football code in the ACT like it is in neighbouring Southern NSW and Western Sydney. I have my doubts that the hype in Canberra for the GWS' Grand Final appearance would be any different. I'd probably agree with you that no one would watch the Grand Final in the Illawarra area! But would get some in metro Sydney though! It'll be interesting to see how the ratings go. It would be unlikely, but it wouldn't be entirely out of the question. The Illawarra is only an 1-1.5 hours south from the Sydney CBD, so the latter is close enough for people who are interested in the game to form an attachment with one of the Sydney clubs. There would also be expats from the southern states living in the Illawarra as well. Actually, that reminds me of a funny moment that occurred while I was at Tafe this afternoon. An elderly lady (who is originally from Tasmania) in my class overheard the match being played through a portable radio and she asked the people nearby, "does anyone know what is going on in the footy?". Everyone just turned around looking completely confused as to what she was saying. Then she clarified that she was referring to the AFL Grand Final and no one knew (or cared about) what was going on anyway.

You have TAFE during the weekend? It was just a one-off. We went to the Wollongong Botanic Gardens to do propagating and cuttings for three hours.

Overall, I’m sure I’ve read before that they get slightly better attendances at their ‘home’ games in Canberra than in Western Sydney. So, the hype would be significant enough either way. I have a feeling Canberra would embrace the Giants as their own team more than what is currently in WS. ...and they did, 114 to 25. I don't know much about AFL (as you'd expect from a Sydneysider) but if that wasn't the most one-sided affair in VFL/AFL Grand Final history, then it surely it at least has to be up there. No, Geelong v Port Adelaide in 2007 was way more one-sided in terms of final margin (163 to 44). However, Port scored a few more goals than GWS did yesterday! Apparently that score of 25 was the lowest in over 90 years. Not a record you would want to achieve.

It’s a shame Collingwood didn’t make it. They surely would’ve made a better game of it (though I still think Richmond would’ve comfortably won).
