2014 in terms of pop culture was juvenile, raunchy, and silly but not dark. 2016 was when pop culture suddenly became "dark".

I don't even know if I would call 2016 "dark". I'd say it was more so edgy then dark. I feel as though it was only around the first-half of 2018 that music truly started to become downbeat and depressing. It was a gradual transition of course and I wouldn't consider 2015-2017 to be "upbeat" years for music in comparison, however it was once Trap had hit it's peak in popularity that the overall mood really started to change. I dont remember 2014 being dark, sure there were some big world events that year (which would only escalate in the following few years), but in terms of the pop culture, it had a pretty upbeat feeling imo. I agree. "Shake It Off", "Happy" and "All About That Bass" were some of the biggest hits in 2014 and they are about as upbeat as anything that was released while electropop was still popular.

The pop culture of 2014 has more connections with the upbeat and cheesy early 2010s than the dark and edgy late 2010s.

2014 wasn't even close to dark IMO. If anything it was almost as upbeat as the early 2010s.

I wonder why so many people hate 2014. 2016 I can understand, but with 2014 it's not coming to me...

It was pretty dumb and some of it has abhorrently badly aged. On the other it's the first year that is purely 2010s with the whole hipster-meme-challenge-super thight clothes culture with almost no trace of the previous transitional era, so at least it has that going for it.

2014 was awesome. I was 8 most of that year. I had just moved to my new house in nj and was looking forward to starting my 3rd year in elementary. The music was great and I loved how Taylor Swift was a big hit

For me 2014 was so mediocre, culturally devoid and lacking that I can't remember much of what happened that year. I'd argue I remember more of 2009 than 2014, and i was 7 years old in 2009! Exactly. I didn't dislike sitting through it, but 2014 was so forgettable tho, idk. 2009 is waaaaay more memorable.

2014 was ok. I've also had to deal with some really tough times since then. However, like anything else there are many ups and downs

Not to get into a decadeology debate, but i'm not sure if I would personally agree with that. I've always been of the opinion that 2013 was the first "purely 2010s" year and I can remember actually thinking that at the time. Selfies and #hashtags rose to prominence in March-April of that year, smartphones had become the dominant form of phones and music had removed itself from the styles and aesthetics of the 2000s (some of which was still lingering around between 2010-2012). 2013 may have had significant ties to the "electropop era", but on the other hand, 2010s culture had well and truly established itself by that time as well.
